Running diff size tires and other spare tire issues
Ok, so I searched on who out there keeps there stock spare in case of emergency with bigger tires... not my issue
What I am doing/have done is ordered one (1) used 285-75-16 to put on my spare tire rim, this I will use to check for clearances, which I'm pretty sure now will be absolutely ok... the thing is I want to mount this on my spare rim now, to be able to play around with the 4Runner un-rushed in the next month and a half before back to school... I will be needing four new tires around that time... they are looking decent, but not great, and not for the winter.
So in the mean time, if i mount my new 285 on the spare rim and all works out (fits) (1) will this fit in my stock spare location and (2) I have read the replies of people running smaller spares, but what about larger, I imagine it is about the same idea, run in front and reduce speed to keep impact on rear diff minimal while sacrificing driveability...
constructive input appreciated, thanks

Yes it will fit in the spare location.
And if it's worn down like you say, I don't think it will hurt anything to run it as a spare for a flat.
As long as you don't drive 200 miles to get the flat fixed.

thanks ringmaster, but the spare isnt really too worn down, it is just a return with about 1000 miles on it from discount tire direct's wholesale warehouse on ebay... its a yokohama geolander though, lucked out and it matches what I will be getting four of, so the tread isnt toohuge on it anyway

oh, i tried for 20 min to get it to fit under the truck Ringmaster, no way in **** it'll fit , hits the panhard and the bumper, cant "tuck it up" at an angle either... looks like its either roof it or only buy three when i get new ones

you could always it in the back of the tailgate area. Ive seen that done by turboale with his. I dont know if deflating it would be easier to mount underneath and have a air compressor on hand.
I know that having a different size spare can also throw off VSC

I have a 50% worn 285/75/16 that I completly deflated and shoved up underneath, I then aired it up to 20psi. It's tight but I can still get it out if I need to and 20psi is enough to get you out of a pinch. I plan on getting a small compressor and at that point 20 psi is a big jump start for the compressor. With the less aggressive tread you should be able to squeeze it in there.

hmm slc97sr5.... yeah im thinking more about that route... but its brand new, and i may just buy 3 more instead of 4 and put the most decent one i have current on spare rim (smaller but oh well) (the spare from last owner is balder than bald)

That would work, I wanted the peace of mind knowing all my tires were within 1/4" of each other as I have the tru-trac up front. Nearly any tire place will have a used 285 for cheap...like 15-25 dollars cheap. They are popular on F-250's and Dodges.

Exactly, mine has 6/32's on it. Just get something you'd feel comfortable having on sharp rocks and still be able to do 50mph when you get to the highway, I really need to buy a compressor. Since you can see the tire poking down from the bottom and it sometimes drags along trail obstacles it's not a bad idea to get something with a beefier sidewall, ie...MTR's, BFG MT's or even an old nasty swamper, not only are they thicker skinned but they look cool lurking under your truck!

SLC97SR5 have you mod'ed the tire lift location with the body lift, i have seen people rebuild that to raise 1inch also.... and, do you have the factory (or any) hitch?

i thought your advice had come from experience, (what i was looking for )
oh well, i'm considering a few other options, maybe even tossing the hitch, i never pull a trailer, only objects (other vehicles or my own) on a strap, so hooks would do fine instead, that might give me enough clearance to get'er up there, i dont want to mod the panhard bar, or a new set-up, that would be worthless

No, I haven't made any changes regarding the BL. The only impact is that the tire sits 1" lower than factory plus another .5" for the increased width of the 285. I was able to shove it ABOVE the panhard bar. There is no rubbing or interference. It will fit easily w/o your hitch. My hitch is what's in the way. I tow 4Wheelers often and really like the extra impact protection of the hitch. I wouldn't take your's off. I'd like to integrate it into a whole new assy. like BruceTS, Bamachem and SSF. It's bed time for me...good luck.
