New Owner of 97 4Runner SR5 - Just wanted to say Hi

I just picked up a fully loaded 4runner SR5 this weekend. This is by far the nicest vehicle I have ever owned and am really looking forward to setting it up for remote wheeling and cross-county adventures. Tires and suspension are shot so I will be upgrading both in the next few months. Then armor and lockers, etc.

I am leaning toward Goodyear MTRs for treads (although the price is higher than I'd like to dish out and I don't really NEED mud terrains) and OME all the way around for the suspension.

My wife and kids keep commenting on how much they like the running boards and I keep having to remind them that they are coming off. I guess I can compromise and add a slider that has some no-slip tape for them to use as a step.

I look forward to tapping into the resources at this board. Thanks in advance for the advice!

Welcome to the boards! I bought a used 98 a few months ago and I'm loving it too.

If you do a lot of mudding, those MTRs are great (from what I hear). As for suspension advice, I know a few guys here have the OMEs but definitely search on "suspension" on the boards here to get a better idea if OME is the right choice for you.

When I was researching suspension options, I wrote OME and the Western Sales Manager there emailed me back and basically said that what they sell here to fit 4runners is not optimized for 4runners but for Toyota *Prados*. He did not recommend that I use these shocks and to wait for the 4runner-optimized shocks to come out. Sorry, he did not give a date. I wish I still had the original email but sschaefer did post it on Outdoorwire somewhere.

Speaking of Steve (sschaefer), go check out his website and read up on his recommendations. Steve has tried just about everything under the sun and his recommendations are definitely worth checking out: http://fastq.com/~sschaefer/recommend.html

On ODW, there is a great page w/ people who have written about their suspension setups. Go check it out at:

http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/4Runner/tech/suspension/

And finally....

ANGELS RULE, BABY!!! WOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOO!!!

With all the mods you have planned, (and the ones you have not even thought about yet ), you have come to the right place!
Curious, what year 4Runner do you have?

Thanks for the warm welcome.

I will look into the suspension options a bit more. I had OMEs all around on another vehicle and really liked the ride but didn't realize they didn't have a kit specifically for the 4runner.

I just got a new digital camera so pics are promised.

Open up my wallet!

I hope this rig doesn't become a bottomless money pit, but I already have a huge want-list for my 4runner:

Goodyear MTRs
Rock Sliders
SAW Coilovers and some decent rear spring/shock setup
Swaybar Disconnects
Roof Rack
Auxillary Lights
Heavy-duty belly armor
Dual ARB Air Lockers with a decent compressor
TJM T17 winch bumper
Mile Marker 10,500 lb Hydraulic Winch
Custom rear bumper with swing-out tire carrier, high-lift mount, and jerry can holder
Dual Optima batteries
Engel Freezer/Fridge

How's that for only owning my 4runner for four days??? Too bad I am totally broke right now and have to start saving from scratch . . .

hello, and welcome.

these guys are right about keeping your wallet closed. i dont have any money right now but i plan on getting 3" lift from cornfred and some new tires/wheels by next summer

im getting an ARB bull bar, it should be here soon. that's my biggest mod so far. also have a sweet kenwood headunit, 600W kenwood KAC-729S amp, and a 10" thunder 600 MTX sub in a custom box. also some new floormats, but i want to get some huskies. oh, and a steering wheel cover and some shift knobs

there is a lot of stuf i am planning, but am forgeting most of it im sure. but this is definatly the place to find out anything you need to about your rig. glad you found the site.

Welcome to the forum!
I've been here for about a week and the folks here have given me a great first impression. They're a great bunch of people. Watch your wallet though. They've allready got me wanting some nerf bars.

Have fun

We should have our own forum dedicated solely to the 97 SR5. It is by far the most superior model of the 3rd gens

NerfHerder-97SR5- - Those TRD Emboridered seats are awesome!

I just tallied up my wish list and it comes to a grand total of $6490 and that's assuming I do all of the installation myself (except for setting up the gears for the ARBs) and custom build the rear bumper. So if you see any of my stuff on Ebay, bid high and bid often!!

Welcome Transalper!
I'm new here too.
Although i have a taco, its great hanging out with a bunch with 4bangers.

I'm on the same boat as rowan, "i dont have any money right now but i plan on getting 3" lift". Also as soon as i get my gf's killer kungfu grip away from my wallet.
but at least rowan he has a nice stereo system going.

I just like to linger around here and learn lots about toy trucks.
Welcome.

thanks dragonbud. i do have a little bit of money, so i am not TOTALLY dreaming.... you can get a 3" lift from cornfred for under 300 bucks. thats spacers in the front, AAL's in the back. comes with extended brake lines and longer rear shocks. sweet!

half the price of the friggin' ARB....
