Need Tire Advice for '04 Limited 4Runner

Hey guys,

I finally had a flat with my factory dunlops. The tire was ate up before I could stop. This has urged me to go ahead and get a lift and tires. I plan to have a local shop install the Revtek 3-inch kit soon. I need advice on tires and wheels. I'm leaning toward the BFG ATs 265-70-17s (32s). But I don't really like how the stock wheels sit so far inside the wheel wells.

Questions:

1. BFG AT 265-70-17s (32s) vs. Wrangler AT 275-70-17s (32.5s)? I want to fill up the wheel well, but I do not want to trim (at least not much). I would rather stick with BFGs, but I think 285-70 (33) BFGs would be out of the question. I am afraid the 265s will look too small. Why doesn't BFG make a 275? The Wrangler ATs have a pretty low rating on Tire Rack too.

2. Stock wheels vs. 0-offset wheels? Will the new tires be fat enough to bring the tire out to the edge of the fender well? If not, I guess I need new wheels too. I wanted the American Racing Outlaws with the clear coat but they don't make them in 17s. Any suggestions (teflon maybe)? How do yall think the telfon would look with a black 4Runner?

Thanks for the help,
Barry Dickson

Hey there Barry:

First off, welcome aboard! Second off, installation of the Revtek spacers are a relatively simple procedure. So if you're looking into having a shop do it, you might consider trying it yourself. There are a few members here that have no automobile experience that was able to install these spacers.

As for wheels, I believe the 04 4runners in the Limited trim come w/ the 13" brakes. If this is the case, you will not be able to fit 16" wheels. If this is not the case then you should be able to install some 16" wheels. I have some 16x8 AR-23's (0 offset 4.5 backspacing). These fit fine.

If you're looking for some A/T tires, Revo's are recommended across the board as being one of the best in it's class. Take a quick look at their tires and give it a try. Also if you plan to buy them, buy them at Discount Tire/America Tire as they have a great warranty program where if it gets damaged (onroad/offroad), they'll replace it free (taxes apply). It's definitely a good thing if you blow your tire and it's still new.

Good luck and if ya got more q's just ask away!

A bit of a thread hijack here but we are discussing appearances. I saw a Hummer H-2 yesterday with wheels with _huge_ rims. If the wheels were 35" then the rims must have been at least 33", you could barely see any sidewall. My immediate thought was - there is a truck that never goes off road.

I posted this link in another thread. This link has a Prado 120's brake calipers being modified to fit 16" wheels.

do the Revtek installation yourself if you have the time - it'll save you some $$ and is easy enough.

(but, Goodtimes, if it was me you were referring to - I did have automobile experience before doing that install)

I'm almost positive that the 04 Limiteds have the larger brake calipers, like the 03 Sport ... so I'm pretty sure you won't be able to fit 16" on there unless you shave down the caliper like Richard just suggested. Otherwise, you're stuck with the 17" wheels like me.

I did the Daystar lift 2.5" and fitted Bridgestone Revo's 265/70/17, which requires no trimming.

Here's a thread with the pics
https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f117/4th-gen-daystar-lift-revos-before-after-pics-32099/
you can probably fit bigger tires, but I like how they fit currently.

Also 4route started a thread with writeups to install 4th Gen lifts. Both she and I did write ups with pics . The links are on this thread
https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f117/4th-gen-lift-write-ups-31376/

SO welcome and happy modding

yeah ... as bulldog said, the 265/70/17s are just one size up from your current 265/65/17s, so there would be no trimming involved. with the 285s, you'll have a lot of trimming to do ...

In relation to Good Times comment on Discount Tire. BEWARE!...I bought my BFG A/Ts there and the salesman told me the same thing when I bought the warranty, that normally they would just fix it for you, but if you have the warranty, they'll just replace it and not even bother fixing it. Well, three weeks ago I got a large screw into one of my tires, and all they did was fix it. The manager told me to look at the warranty and it states that if they can fix it safely (ie no sidewall, etc) that they will and if not they will replace it. I told him what was told to me by one of his salesman and he didn't care b/c the warranty didn't say that. I'm sure there are some shops that will replace it and go against what the warranty says (which is great!), but just beware if someone pitches you that when they suggest the warranty.

Oscar -- on that site you posted, they mentioned something about the dealerships offering to grind down the calipers in order to fit 16" on the trucks with larger calipers ... I wonder if this is true?

I wonder ... are the stock Limited 17" wheels too narrow for good off-roading? All these numbers and things get confusing.
