Jacob's Electronic ingition??

Hey, all--newbie here.

I was talking to a woman today about her truck [she has an '86 Toy X-cab 4x4, carb. engine]. She was telling me how she got a Jacob's electronic ignition installed in her vehicle, and how it jumped up her power, as well as increase her efficiency to 38 mpg hwy. It has about 140k miles on it. I only get abou 22 mpg hwy [163k on mine] I am not familiar with these ignitions first-hand, so I would like some valuable input [she also claims that installing a magnetic device on her fuel line increased her mileage as well, which I know is BS].

How good are they? Are they worth the cost--whatever that may be? I know they are supposed to guaranteee something like a 20% increase in fuel mileage, or am I bass ackwards on that? Are there other ignitions that perform as well for less?

BTW--I have a 1984 Toyota SR5 X-Cab 4x4, stock. Thanks for any help you may have, and I look forward to getting more info for my Toy in the eons to come.

I don't think any ignition system is going to increase fuel economy by 20%. If one does let me know, I'd love to get my mileage up to 12.

I bought Jacobs for my 85 4runner....off good ol ebay to boot.

I have noticed quite the difference all around. BUT- I originally installed it on my worn engine with over 270 K on it, and now it's on my not-broken-in-yet new engine. But all in all, I would say go for it.

Good luck.

I have heard there is not much difference on the V6, but I installed the Jacob's on my '90 22RE truck I use to have before the 4Runner.

It made a little amount of difference in low end, but only about 1 to 2 MPG gas wise.

The nice thing is I could not get my engine to ping when it was hooked up.
I'd even lug it some going up hills that would have normally made the engine ping.

Their wires do suck though.
They claim the unit will not work right with factory wires.
BULL.

The Jacob's wires broke down from the heat from my Stan's Headers Tri-Y header.
Replaced them with factory Toyota wires and it ran better, and they did not break down from the extra heat.

I think she is mistaken about getting such terrific mileage though.

They're not worth the price, but they will bump up the power a horse or two. As for mileage, I used to get 250 miles to a tank on the highway, now I can get up to 320... which translates to something like 21 mpg. But I do believe that lady was mistaken when she said she got 38 mpg. She probably did see an increase, but it wasn't that much. She's driving a 4x4, not an Echo.

Thanks for the input. I pretty much figured she was full of bovine scat, but wanted to know what good an ignition like that would do to my 22R.

Does this mean that Jacobs systems are not worth it for a 3rd Gen 4Runner?

I had one on my 4Runner and noticed very little change and only 1mpg gain. Not worth the money.

I'm pretty sure Jacobs does not make a system for the 3.4L. But MSD does.
