Many of the junkyard searches are less thorough than they would lead you to believe.
Try Irbis Offroad in Aurora, CO. Shipping is not the end of the world.
Modifying the housing is doable, I've done it. You need to be a proficient welder, and drill STRAIGHT, and have your wits about you concerning fabrication. More than a one-banana IOW.
However, if you drive a 96, you do not have a compatible 8" diff. You have an 8.3, and they do not interchange. The e-locker housing will make things infinitely easier.
