i am in need of a cv. so i was thinking of getting one of thoes cheap ebay cv's, they sell for around 60 to 80 bucks. what do you guys think? anyone ever buy a cheapie?

NO!!!!! Like said above, get one locally. I've always used NAPA CV's with much success. But I get NEW CV's, not the reman'ed. I've heard too many people snapping reman'ed CV's. They should be ~$100 or so. Lifetime replacement. Even if the ebay store offers this, you still have to mail it in, wait for it to come--a lot of downtime. With Autozone/NAPA, you get it the same day (via your local store).

I've had some pretty dissappointing experiences with replacement parts on Ebay. Sometimes, they work well, but often don't. NAPA or Autozone would be my suggestion or as was already mentioned: rockauto.com.

i'm gona price out the autozone/napa ones. ever since i put 285/75's on i've been getting some loud noises up front. both cv's have riped boots so i wanted to get 1 and then see if the one i take out is worth fixing. thanks for the responce

Because once the CV boot has torn, the damage has been done. If you want to do the boot job right, you have to take out the CV, clean it up well, and then install the boot. Too much work for me (and messy!). I’d rather just get a new CV. Also, the only disadvantage with online services is you have to wait for the parts to come in the mail.

I replaced my front cv's with some from advance and i'm just going to say i regret that decision everyday. I dont know id their manufacturing tolerances are different or what but they are crap compared to stock. And these were new units not remans. I had to replace them 3 times with only 2.5" of lift AND a diff drop because the boots would rip and the entire iner joint would move up and down like it was binding. WITH 2.5" OF LIFT!!!! what crap. But NAPA is a good place to get some, we own an auto repair shop and love NAPA's parts. But if you have the cash get some from toyota.

just a follow up. my 4runner is lifted 3 inchs. i put in 1 napa 130 doller and 1 60 doller ebay cv around the same time as this thread was started. the napa cv has failed. being both boots torn. the cheaper one has no broken boots... gona try to warranty the napa one

rockauto.com = 60 dollar CV joints with no core charge. buy two, and replace your old torn ones. buy two boots and repair them. 4 CV joints for the price of 1 from autozone/napa. and you now have two spares.

I got the Napa ones for about $90 per side. Have about 3k miles on them so far and everything looks good. I'm lifted a little over 2.5 inches in the front.

That's weird, I've heard good things about NAPA CVs. Maybe that side was exposed to more sticks poking up when wheeling or something? I've replaced even OEM CVs ($450) where the boots ripped, just a matter of a stick at the right angle.

I recently used a new "FEQ (First Equipment Quality)" from Carquest on my '00 Camry, rather than going junkyard like in the past for the 4Runnners. Seems very well machined, and made overall. $110, Chinese unfortunately... No problems 2k miles in though. But don't get me started on what a PITA that intermediate shaft bearing is, be very glad the 4runners don't have one.

I had bad experiences with the Advanced Auto ones. Had one original fail. Replaced both with the Advanced Auto ones. One failed with in 10k miles joint came totally apart. Of course it was the side that was not failing on the original. I put the 250k stock one back on. It is doing great. Now the other Advanced one is failing (boot split). May try the NAPA one. Life time warrany is no good if you are on the beach hours from any shop!!

If you haven't already installed the new part...
Do you know about the boot slide mod? You basically leave the smallest part of the old outter boot mounted to the shaft, cut off the rest, and mount your new boot over the old end (still clamped on) so the new boot end mounts further out on the shaft. That stretches the boot out further so the flanges aren't rubbing due to the changed CV angle from your lift.

Mine is torn and I am going to try this. Porche 930 boots are another option. Lots of info on both on the Yota sites.

why not just replace the tripod joints and boots. if the axle shaft is fine just replace the parts. and chaep axles have been known to twist and break at the joint. NAPA sells the tripod joints
