hey folks,

has anyone experimented with dynamat's noise dampening products? i figured that they might be good for folks with tires that generate a lot of road noise. just wondering what everyone though.

I personally think it's a waste of money. When I had my car, I wanted to dynomat my trunk to help the rattling stop. The place I said it would be around $300 just for the lid of the trunk. I never though about that stuff again.

yeah, it's definitly a bit on the high side. i'm sure there are other companies who aren't as high.

ill be doing a write up on that directly along with a few other odds and ends.

Dont' mess with dynamat it costs WAY too much for what you get. Instead get hi-temp mastic from www.mcmaster.com. Way cheaper for the same result. I utilized 3 of their big sheets covering my 4 door skins and the rest went on the roof. I also used a total of 12 cans of expanding foam in my yota (I think it will float now...LOL) As far as cutting out road noise the roof was a HUGE help, but if you have pulled up the carpet already notice that toyota did a great job in doing some sound deadening. All you need to add is something to kill the high frequency road noise. So you just add some 8# carpet padding underneath your carpet and in the cargo area.....the results will shock you. Incidentally, at 80mph you can talk very softly and everyone inside will hear you. Ill have to take some db measurements of the current road noise....

Hey Bumpin,

Would any of that hi-temp mastic help with the insulation as far as heat goes? I go camping in the desert and end up sleeping in my truck cause everyone else snores :pig:

Anyway, it gets damn cold at night out there and last time I forgot a sleeping bag and nearly froze! Thanks.

It should help a small amount, but I think the biggest thing to help the insulative properties of your rig would be the carpet padding. The more air you can have btwn you and the outside the better.

One problem you may run into with hi temp mastic in the desert is that the door skin and outer skin will get DAMN hot....im not sure if any asphalt based adhesive would stick... try a small amount on a verticle location and see if it stays put in the dester heat after a few days.

I also see some interesting stuff that would be better than carpet padding i think...54495T57 Not sure, but I think it would insulate better than carpet padding and provide all of the noise reduction characteristics.

Two questions: does this stuff need to be applied with a heat gun? Also, does this stuff smell like tar or anything funky?

dynomat was intended for speakers and noise dampening for the speakers...i personally have dynomat thoughout my truck and it really doesnt help outside noise..you can tell the system speakers sound louder and more sharp...i still think its not worth the money for the minute performance (10 to 15 percent)

nope, with hi temp mastic, no need for a heat gun. It does however have a wierd smell that stays for about 3 or 4 days after that it's gone.

Bumpin' Thanks for the tip on the 8# pad. I took everything out today & installed it in my 4Runner from front to back. It has made a significant difference in the interior road noise. If anyone want to do this just go to Home Depot & buy the 6'x9' 83 pd they sell. It cost $20 bucks & was worth the 2 hrs it took to install.

One thing I haven't done, but will be doing soon is to add the padding to my door skins. As I said already, all 4 of my doorskins have the hi-temp mastic, but Ive been thinking about using 3M tac 90 spray adhesive to anchor a layer of this padding. Then sealing the door with another layer of hi temp mastic inplace of the door seal. This would REALLY knock out road noise form the doors.

Doing the roof helps BIG TIME....2nd gens are easy to get to the roof skin but it just takes forever. Then there's the hood - you can replace the insulation with some sort of aluminum based asphalt adhesive on the hood.

My goal is to be able to drive at 80mph and not even realize the engine is running....

Once my test is over this next wed, Ill do a full write up on the mods Ive done on my truck....
