i have a 2000 toyota 4runner 3.4L which gets 300km to a full tank of gas no check engine light and the part that really makes no sense is when towing a 2000 pound trailer with 4 snowmobiles on it i get 270km to the tank how could it be burning almost the same with no load ? how could it be running that rich without throwing any codes wondering if anyone had a similar issue with horrible fuel economy

the truck has 330,000km on it 2.5inch ome lift kit 33's on in the summer and 265\75\16 winters no difference in fuel economy between the 2 sets of tires either also was shocking 5 speed ans i swapped out the gear ratio from 4;10 to 4;30 with the elocker

Could have a bad o2 sensor, doesn't always throw a code. What's with the km's?

When I bought my 4Runner, it had a code for a bad O2 sensor. I didn't know it because the check engine light was burned out. I put a scanner on it to find that there were unresolved codes in the system.

That is about the same mileage I've been getting lately in my 2000 4runner 4x4 V6. I think it has everything to do with winter conditions and winter fuel. There is a good article here:

When you are towing your trailer chances are you are driving longer distances than you are around town. Longer distances allow your vehicle to warm up to operating temps. My drive to work takes about 5 minutes so the truck never fully warms up.

I have a 98, 3.4, 4x4, manual and right now I get 350 to 400km per tank. In the summer I get 400km+. Could be a brake dragging, it wouldn't throw a code. I am also in Toronto.

Ive been told that its the injectors, you can get them purged at the dealer or Canadian Tire and you should see a big improvement but to truly have it done right they need to be rebuilt but thats big bucks.

Don't let canadian tire do anything to your truck except change the tires. I've had nothing but bad experiences or mediocre experiences with high costs. There are a couple of injector shops around that will pull your injectors test em, flush em, test again and reinstall. They'll give a printout with flow rate differences and such. witch hunter does the same thing but your have to mail them so you'll have some down time. If any of your injectors are leaking they'll also leak after you turn her off so you likely smell gas in your oil. just my 2 cents, good luck

I get about 12 to 14 mpg with the winter blend gas no matter how I drive loaded or empty . I have checked this the best I can .I :jessica:seldom drive more than 125 miles with out filling up

In both the pick up and the 4Runner although my normal tools for work can go 800 to 1000 pounds for what it is worth.

Run seafoam every tank for a while, should take care of injectors and dirty valves/head.
Full bottle per tank.

So the cost per mile will go even higher? I'm sure the original poster would love to go from 12mpg to effective 10mpg, considering the cost of Seafoam.

Second, putting seafoam in the gas is a pretty retarded idea. Gasoline itself is an EXCELLENT solvent. There is notihng in there that Seaform could dissolve that gasoline could not dissolve by itself!

I guess we will put you under the "seafoam does nothing" group.

Take the advice if you will, I have been using seafoam in all combustion engines for years, and I will SPEAK FROM EXPERIENCE, it keeps your engine cleaner.

I always reference my Friends 2005 CR250.

He is a maintainance freak. He rebuilds his motor EVERY WINTER. I introduced him to seafoam 4 years ago. First year he ran it in every tank(1/3 bottle). Come winter time, the engine was spotless inside. Next summer his "buddy" told him seafoam was "no good". Trusting this "bike expert" he stopped using seafoam for the that season and come re-build time LOOK CARBON EVERYWHERE. Last two season have been seafoam summers and I took a look at his piston this time, clean as a whistle.

So take that for what you will. If gas was such a good solvent than engines wouldn't have build up issue and injector cleaner would never be made.

This is a great argument because everything ever made always worked as advertised, right?

But seriously, I can tell you that more than 99% of cars out there never had injector cleaner run through the system, yet they lasted for many years and ran 100,000s of miles without any issues related to injectors or fuel delivery. It is not part of any maintenance schedule for any fleet.

My 4R with the same set-up as the OP gets about 260 miles (420 Km) per tank. 300 Km per tank sounds terrible and would indicate a problem with your measurements or your truck. How about changing the plugs and wires while you're at it and see if that helps. Instead of Seafoam, why not just use a good quality gasoline with EFI cleaner in the formula (Shell, Chevron, Texaco only for my vehicles).

My setup is similar to yours. It could be due to the winter ( im in Sask, so its pure -41 hell right now ). I would suggest doing these if you already haven't, new air filter, oil change-penzzoil or castrol gtx 5w30 and new oil filter, remove the elbow from your airbox that connects to the fender, check your tires.. i have mine at 33psi, try to avoid using 4wd when you can, check your coolant, clean your MAF with electrical contact cleaner, take out your intake and see how dirty it is/needs cleaning, clean throttle body. There are write-ups on some of these here and just google it if you can't find it.
I would assume that your letting it warm up because of the winter and the idling is burning gas, the 4wd and snow/ice will heavily effect mpg.

Its been like 6,000km+ since my last oil change and air filter change, ive been letting my 4runner warm up for 5-10 min and been using 4wd 40% of city driving. I was getting 330kms on a tank. So I'll be tuning it all up again.

these are just suggestions that have worked for me in the past. In the summer I had blocked off the intake silencers and was getting 500+km with 30% city 70% highway. Sometimes it seems the 4runner wants to get bad mpg and good mpg.
