Tires and Wheels for 87 4Runner
My 16 yr old son has inherited an 87 4runner 5spd 4cyl (stock). The first thing he wants to do is put at tires on for hunting and the mud. We've been trying to figure out what the largest tire that will work without scraping or sapping too much of the already weak engine. It looks like 32x11.5 or 31x10.5 will work, although some say the 31s are the largest, some say the 32. Can someone confirm this? Also, I know it's really a newbie question, but if he finds a used set of mounted tires in one of these sizes that have a 6 bolt pattern, is that enough to make sure they will work, or are some 6 bolt patterns different than others?
Thanks for any and all input!

Generally 31x10.50 or 32x11.50 fit on a stock truck:

6 on 5.5" is pretty standard, only thing to watch is the ID of the center hole on the wheel. Make sure it is big enough to clear the front hubs, usually 4-1/8" is a pretty good size, but measure the OD of your hubs to be sure. Some Chevy wheels have a center hole that is too small to fit on the Toyota hubs.

Go with 31-10.50. I also have an 87 4runner and i had 32-11.50 mud terrains on stock suspension at the time and the fronts rubbed at full lock off road. It was also extremly sluggish with the 22re and the stock 4.10's. I sold them and purchased the same tire and rim combo in a 31-10.50-15 and im much happier. It was basically the difference of only holding 4th gear on the freeway with the 32's and now being able to easily hold 5th gear with the 31's. It's a big difference.
