Anybody paint over the red stripe on their black steelies?

Just bought a set of used 15x8 black steelies with the red/blue stripe around the perimeter. I'd like to paint over the stripes with black before getting tires mounted on them. I was curious if anyone has done the same and what was the technique and materials used (ie. satin black spray paint?).

I'm thinking about cutting a circle out of cardboard to fit on the inside of the tire just short of the lip with the stripes on it and paint the entire lip. Rough with 300 grit sand paper and use Rustoleum satin black spray paint. I figured that would be a decent match between the worn gloss wheel.

Thanks for your thoughts and pics!

I had the tire ON when I did it. I used painters masking tape and ran a strip along the inside seam, then used magazine paper to cover the tire. I sanded it with 220 and painted the whole rim with a satin color by duplicolor. Duplicolor is used by a lot of auto body shops and DIY people.
Hope that helps
