chevy swap questions

hello all

looking into a chevy engine swaps into my '92 toyota hilux (currently 3.0L with a 5 speed R150F). i know there's lots of info on the 4.3L swap but i'm looking to answer *my own* specific questions here (selfish i know ). please indulge me...

q's on the 4.3L swap:

1) i know there are adapters that will allow the R150F to work with the 4.3L and i'm not too worried about mounts. i am concerned about the oil pan and the height of the engine because i want to keep my stock suspension geometry and am not a fan of body lifts. can the 4.3L sit in a hilux with stock suspension (IFS)?

2) does anybody with a 4.3L into a more or less stock hilux or 4runner have info on MPGs with this swap? it seems like most people who've done this swap went for big tires. i'm curious to know what it can do in terms of MPGs with 31s or 33s (and hopefully with an R150F)

q's on the vortec I5 motors (3500 and 3700). i found this thread but not much more.

1) any other examples of this swap?

2) any particular reasons (other than donor availability) this swap isn't more popular?

You can put a 4.3 in with a stock suspension what you will have to check is the clearance of the oil pan and your differential now if the clearance is not enough, places like northwest Offroad and I beloved polyperformance make an oil pan conversion for the 4.3 and the v8 series motors

there's no project yet (at least on my end).

i'm still not sure about the vortec I5 motors (3500 and 3700) and there's not a whole lot on them anywhere.

until then i don't want to rush into anything 4.3L related

thanks for the info minizilla

i'm still holding out for someone who has done it (it seems like almost everyone who has gone this route has done so because they had big tires and there for a lift).

I am on the home streach of putting a 350 TBI injection motor in my 1995 hilux I used the advance adapters bell housing and the 150F 5spd. Mine already had a 3" body lift installed and It looks like it will be a tight fit without the body lift. I think a 2" body lift will be enough tho. I did have oil pan clearance problems I did not want to install a 6 in suspension lift which was one of 2 options or buy a expensive oil pan so I made brackets and done a 2,1/2" differential drop axle clearance looks sufficient and 1" clearance at the oil pan. I used 1,1/2" ball joint spacers to level the riding height. I think you can use a S10 4X4 stock oil pan with the v6 but for my case I wanted to do a tbi and the V8 stuff was cheaper cause I already had the drive train I have owned v8 full size 4X4 pu's and 4.3 4X4 s10's also. There is little difference in the fuel mileage between the 2 trucks maybe 1 to 1.5 mpg difference. After the install is completed and I get all the bugs worked out of the fuel injection I am planing on building a fresh small cubic in motor with a lot of eco mods and using the TBI system to hopefully get better MPG's I expect to get about 20 to 21 mpg on the highway with the stock 350 TBI with the V6 expect about 22 to 23 mpg but plan on using the 4 cyl 4.10 differential's as most 3.0's came with 4.56's(5spd) or 4.88's(automatic's) and 31.5 tires to keep your RPM's down in an economical range. Good luck

I wanted to do my swap at stock height, but oil pan clearance really won't happen. NWOR advertises a modified pan for this use, but I've never heard a positive review of them as a vendor. And I never found another source.

4" bracket lift is recommended. But mine is sitting on a 2" body/drivetrain lift, and I only had to put a small dent in the corner of the oil pan to clear the front diff. And another slight dent in the corner of the transmission pan (700R4) to clear the front driveshaft.

As much as I hate body lifts, honestly, with the tcase clearance gained from the drivetrain lift, I think it's totally worth it.

most times leave the stock mounts on the engine and weld to the frame when all is in place, and reinforce

I second the welded mounts... I'm about done with my 4.3 tbi swap into my 88 pickup. Just gotta swap fuel pumps lol. I used a gm 4l60e transmission and built a controller out with an arduino. The wiring on the motor was a pain, but that could be because the guy cut off the wires at the firewall and I had to buy the ecm connecters off of a different truck and change pins to make it work. The only other issue is the exhaust manifolds usually dont fit. I finally found a pair that almost work. Just gotta take the upper a arms off and pitch em. SAS! lol
