Looking to buy a 3rd gen 4Runner, need advice

I sold my '93 SR5 pickup a few months the ago, and I've been looking at getting a 4Runner. I definitely want the optional rear diff lock, but Ive read that in certain years, Limited models can also have a center trans case lock. My question is, does this leave you with a full time AWD mode, or does it still allow you to put the truck in 2wd? And does it affect fuel mileage at all?

Also, I like the leather and interior options of the Limited, but I'm not a fan of the fender flares and the rocker panel molding. Do those come off without holes underneath?

AFAIK you won't find the locking diff on 01/02 3rd gens. They dropped the 'hardware' locking diff in favor of the 'software' ATRAC traction control system - which uses the ABS hardware to clamp a brake on a spinning wheel.

I'm not really familiar enough with that to know if it's better/worse/about the same as an e-locker.

So that leaves 99 and 00 as the two years when it was possible to get the AWD mode trans/transfer case with the hardware rear locker. It was an option, though (AFAIK), regular automatic still included the 2HI/4HI/4LO transfer case that can't be used on pavement. And the manual trans (til 00) never got the AWD transfer case.
