Deckplate mod

Suffice to say I finally did it, and as a warning dont do it to your T100 if you have the airbox that has the grooves in it.

I tried and tried and tried to fine a 3" screw on deckplate-as far as I can tell no one makes them so I settled for 4". After removing the airbox I noticed right away that unless I cut down the flange of the deckplate it wasnt gonna fit right. I wound up taking about 1/4" off all the way around using a dremel (it created a gooey molten plastic mess, dont do it!).

Then I did my best to cut the hole into the airbox, if you dont got one-buy a jigsaw. I actually used a coping saw and gave up, went to walmart and picked up a 20 dollar black and decker cheapie (it didnt even come with any blades!) and did the best I could.

The placement of the deckplate on the front necessitates that you trim a part of the upper flange on the box, the dremel actually worked for this.

Then of course I had to drill new holes for the screws into the deckplates, the old ones were halfway cut off the way I trimmed the plate. Also of note, use fully threaded screws to secure it-I didnt and spent 20 mins trying to scrounge some up in my shop. Also make sure you use alot of rtv sealant to make a watertight gasket round the plate.

FInally when install it expect your air filter to be 1/4" to tall now due to the placement of the deckplate-no way to place the plate any further own either. Thank god I came up with an ingenious idea of cutting that part of the filter a bit and putting a pantyhoe over the entire filter to make sure nothing comes out.

So in conclusion, I spent 4 hours making this work. The sound is really nice but after all that work I dunno. Those with this style airbox should only attempt this mod if they wanna spend alot of time fabbing, perhaps I will try and adapt a taco/runner box in later ona nd do the mod better. Anyone have the filter box and or a place to find a 3" deckplate!

Its dark outside now, I started at 5pm and was hoping to be done in an hour or so.

The intake box looks very different than the tacos/runners, its the almost the same one my 93 camry used. Large lower box thats fed air from the fender, then a upper box that clamps onto it. Filter sits on top of the lower box.

Sorry you had so much trouble! When I took a good look at my air box I figured it would be a pain to put the deckplate on the front of the box, so I took the easier route and put it towards the engine. I think the only way that you would be sucking in hot air is at stop signs or lights, which isn't very long. The only way it might actually affect the motor is if you are stuck in gridlock or something of that nature.

If you have done the ISR mod too, then you will notice that your throttle response is a little better (at least mine is), and it sounds like its got some horses under the hood when you get on it. I went from 12 mpg highway to 16 sometimes 18 mpg highway. It's well worth doing these mods.

Thank you, I highly appreciate it. I am starting to think the main reason that my air filter wont fit is the deckplate itself is to high at the top. I could have installed it a bit lower I think, but felt it wouldnt seat right ont he box. On 4x4 wire another guy showed me his and he made it fit.

Been thinking about this...

I 've been thinking about doing the deck plate mod myself. On a 3.4 02 taco. I have heard that if you do the DP mod, there is usually pinging afterwards unless you run premium gas. Have any of you guys had this happen with either DP mod, ISR mod, or both?? Just wondering before I take off and cut open my airbox and remove some hoses... Appreciate it.

My deckplate works fine even with the problems I encountered mounting it to the box., I also have the ISR mod and no pinging.
