wheelin the rubicon with i.f.s
me and a couple of my buddies have been seriously thinking about taking a trip and doing the rubicon. we r just tired of the trails around northern california. (Redding area) my question is out of my 4 friends that want to go im the only one with I.F.S. 91 yota 4 inch trail disaster lift. detroit tru-trac limited slip front and rear, brand new cooper discoverer tires and a warn 8000 pound winch. I have suprised a lot of people as to what i push my ifs to do. has anyone wheeled the rubicon without straight axle. would it be stupid to try? just throw ur ideas of facts at me thanks

TTORA has a Rubicon run every year with TONS of IFS trucks running it. The Rubicon IS a VERY tough trail, though - be sure to take spare parts and take your time!

I've done it with an '86 4Runner, heavly loaded with camping gear, and a dog. I had 32" BFG A/T tires, a lunch-time locker front and back, manual hubs, a Pro-Comp 4" lift. I did sustain some body damage, but didn't break any driveline components. I drove all the way from Albuquerque, didn't have any spare axles, nor real rock sliders, and I was able to do it. So, it can be done quite easily with IFS running gear.

You dont have to have a solid axle to do anything...it is skill, not equipment, that gets people to places like that...You just need to take your time, and bring spare parts (cv's, U-joints, etc), just in case.

go with TTORA this summer...last summer, there was an 05 Taco that made it through. A bunch of the IFS guys went in from the tahoe side and chilled at Rubicon Springs with the guys from Bentup until the rest of the TTORA group showed up for the tri-tip dinner.

If I was you and had a backup vehicle I'd DEFINITELY gather up some spares and wheel with TTORA! Those guys will know the trails and would probably keep you outta trouble.
Mebe you can get a nice conversation piece down the side of your truck like that FJ

That FJ was an insurance write-off.
3" lift with 33's and one locker and sliders MINIMAL. What that guy caused to his FJ was 95% driver error from the general consensus point of view so hone your wheeling skills or do it with someone who knows their stuff.

there was another FJC on the TTORA run last year in addition to the yellow one. There was a guy from Toyota and a guy from ARB driving it. They broke their rear ring gear going up Cadillac Hill, but no other damage. The yellow FJ was 100% driver error.

If you DO go on the rubicon with TTORA, stay in the back with Mike (snow camo SAS Taco). He'll be going slower than you (GUARANTEED), and you won't be rushed and tempted to do stupid stuff like the yellow FJ...

a group of 3 subarus did it a few years back. all running stock suspension (IFS AND IRS). 2 of them had divorced tcases, but the third was on stock drivetrain aswell.
bring some spare parts, and your tools, and do it up.
