V6 vs E-locker bearings
I know that the E-locker is a std 8" diff, so uses the same gears as a regular V6 3rd.
But: are all the bearings/crush sleeves/etc the same? Most sites I've looked at don't specifically mention the e-locker 3rd, but I've found 1 (Preformance Offroad Center) that lists a seperate instal kit for an OEM TRD-Elocker and a V6 kit.
I was looking on carpart.com and it seems that there might be a few e-locker rear axles around, so if I could snag one I'd swap the whole axle under my 86 pickup. Yes I know they're wider, I want the width.

The ring & pinion is the same on all Toyota 8" differentials, except the Hi-Pinion, which has reverse-cut gears, and a rare Toyota OEM V6 third built for a thinner than std. 4.88 gear set. The bearings and crush sleeves are all different in each design. The carriers are also all different. Here's another site I found, they sell set-up kits for each.http://www.ironpigoffroad.com/axles/setupkits.shtml Wabfab, probably has em cheaper.http://www.wabfab.org

Yes, it's a little more massive than the 4cyl, but they are compatible. You can use the 4cyl pinion with an added spacer in the V6 differential and use the V6 pinion in the 4cyl diff. , as I understand it. The only size difference is in the diameter of a small section of the shaft that is wider to accomodate the bigger inner pinion bearing for the V6 version. There is also, as a result, a minimal strength differentiation between the two.

according to zuk @ gearinstalls.com, you use 3 of the 4 bearings. theres one big ass carrier bearing, and from the dealer with my 20% discount, was well over $100cdn! i just dropped off my eocked 3rd and the guy setting them up (ex toy master tech) is reusing most of the OE bearings/shims..etc except the big CB, and one and another one i think. he's setup many elockers...and he told me most of the other elocker regear situations..the bearings are in almost new or definitely reusable condition.
there are only a handful of 'elocker' master install kits, and are more expensive than their V6/Turbo counterparts..of course. i bought all the necessary bearings/nuts/crush sleeves..etc from the dealer, to a tune of $350+. yes..ouch. but im anal like that and want to only use toyota oem bearings/seals/etc...especially for something like the elocker. fwiw, the ironpig site shows USD$219...so really 300 wasnt that bad.
i've got a parts list if you want..showing what i ordered. i'll find out what he didnt end up using...if you want to see if you can piece one together from your local stealership.
oh..and when it comes to stealerships...i find if you can establish a good relationship with the parts guys...n hook up a good discount, its well worth paying that extra bit more, even after a %20 discount, and buy oem stuff. (with exception of reman'd stuff of course)

d0ubledown if you've got a master parts list I'd be interested to see it.
I know bearings are a serious ripoff from the stealership, and a master instal kit runs for anywhere between $110-160usd for a V6 3rd. I'd really like to see what if any is different between what you need for a std V6 vs 8" E-locker.
Depending on how many km are on the axle I find I may just re-use the bearings, but it's not my first choise.

The factory 4.88's aren't exactly "rare". The carrier (holds the spider gears) is the same, the thirdmember housing itself is different with the pinion offset to keep the ring gear from being so thick (I don't exactly understand why Toyota thought that was a problem).
