I need some diff gear tech help

I just ate up the rear diff in my 93 4 runner and I'm having a heck of a time finding a replacement ring and pinion. It came from the factory with 4.88 but the ring is 39 teeth and the pinion is 8 teeth which would technically make it 4.875. (I think most of the 4.88 have 40 or 41 teeth) Anyway, the guy who was going to reset the cluster has called all over the US and cannot find this particular ring and pinion anywhere. The best he has done so far is find the whole cluster in WA for $1100. This will not do. Anybody have anymore information that might help me out. I very close to going down to 4.56 if I can't find the elusive 39 tooth.

I would look for a replacement factory 4.88 diff or find any old 4.10 diff (wouldn't be hard to find one on the board here) and buy some Yukons or something and regear it to 4.88

The factory 4.88 carrier for some reason cannot be regeared. I don't really know why.

you can get the ring and pinion from toyota or use a 4.10 housing (buy at junk yard) and regear it with any 4.88 ring and pinion from marlin,TG,ect

edit: damn you beat me

the ring gear is slightly thicker thats why the housing will not work

Oh yeah, the guy said something about it the location of the ABS sensor being a reason why everything was different on my particular rig. How would this affect getting an old 4.10 and regearing. I mean they must have changed it for some reason or they would have just put the same parts in that all of the other trucks had.

You should need just a regular 8" 3rd member unless the ABS sensor is attatched to it, which it may be. That has the gears in it, and is what your looking to replace. Unless, your wanting to go the more spendy route and get an entire axle assembly. The reason you may need a 4.10 3rd member is because of the difference in the particular setup of the factory 4.88 gears. It's what is the oddball part, the ring gear is skinnier than other Toyota gear sets. So the after market manufacturers cater to this by making thiers fit the standard 3rd member, as opposed to the one you've got that will only fit those 4.88 gears.

Factory 4.88 diffs have and offset pinion, and only factory 4.88 gears will work.

Like all the other posts say, go factory, or buy a whole new diff and get aftermarket gears.

If you really wanted to switch to 4.56, thats a factory option as well, and that just uses a standard carrier.

So your saying the whole 3rd has to be exchanged instead of just the carrier.

and yes, the whole third would have to be changed, unless you got factory 4.88 gears

Roger, the gear guy with my rig, called me this morning and told me he took it all apart and there is not a damn thing wrong with anything but 3 teeth missing on the ring gear. So technically, all I need is to find that replacement ring gear.

I am searching every junk yard in the area. I started out by asking for a 93 runner but it doesn't have to be just 93 I believe. Somebody correct me if I am wrong: 93 to 95 would do as long as it was factory 4.88. The G144 code found on the door would be enough to identify the right truck before the diff is torn apart.

Can you just buy a new R&P from toyota? Seems to me like it would be the smart thing to do, the labor is going to be the same whether you use a new or old R&P. OR does toyota not sell the R&P for our factory 4.88's anymore?

IF Toyota even makes the replacement 4.88 R&R, (I will check but I doubt they do) They will want $400 for it. The ABS sensor goes into the top of the carrier so if I have to go 4.10 and re-gear to 4.88, I will have to find a carrier with that ABS sensor spot, which I will find somewhere closer to home than Miss. (nice try though) Labor will not be too bad. I was telling Roger that I had 4.88 and he was so sure that I had 4.56, he said he would do it for free if I didn't

...he lost.

Dang, it's just one of those things I geuss. Well, try http://car-part.com/, they usually have what I need. I haven't had too much trouble finding the factory gears I have, 4.30's, not as rare as those 4.88's maybe. You'll find some somewhere on that site, it'll show you the entire country if you want it to. Don't just look for the r&p, you can, but you'll sometimes find more results if you look under carrier, or differential, or however else it's worded on there. And the prices range considerably, so you may find it cheaper to get a 3rd member, or carrier with the ring you need than just the r&p from someone else on there. I just took a quick peek, there were many carriers when I looked in the USA region, none of them in the $1100 range. That price is ridiculously high, or the guy quoting it to you is.
