Question! 22r toyota 4runner efi. cam bolt backed out and timing gear came off. motor has jumped time and probly bent a few valves. is it possible to retime motor after my new head is instaled without removing timing chain cover. motor is in truck.

No.

I don't see any way you could run it around the bottom sprocket and be 100% sure it's on right.

The chain is still in tacked. My problem is getting timing marks on bottom gear alined so I can instal top timing gear.

If you're re-using the old chain then of course you can keep the cover on.

The big question is WHY do you want to? It takes like 5 minutes to remove the timing cover. Might as well replace the whole timing assembly while you have it apart.

I would agree with annoyingrob on this one...instead of messing with it for 3 hours I'd just take the cover off and be able to see everything! Just my 2 cents
