I just bought an 83 Pickup, it currently has rusty ass 15 inch white steel wheels on it and 235/75R15s...

I like the look of the wheels, but they're beyond being able to sandblast and repaint, and besides I believe they're only 5 inches wide.

I've searched and read around a bunch and I've found that 31x10.5s will definitely fit on stock suspension, but I'm just wondering what my best bet would be in terms of dimensions.

The minimum recommended width for 31x10.5R15s by the manufacturers is 7 inches, so I think that's what I'm going to go with.

On the stock wheels I measured 3.75 inches of backspacing, but I'm just wondering if the extra inch and a third of tread width would be a problem with only 3.75" of backspacing?

I'm ordering new rims, so I'd just like to make sure I don't get ones with to much backspacing...

Also, would it be impossible to mount 31x10.5s on the 15x5s that are on the truck right now? I fear that they'd pop the bead quite easily. (Strangely enough the rim says 15x5 right on it, but the manual says that they came with either 15x6 or 15x5.5...)

I run 33x10.50 tires on stock '85 SR5 15x6 steel wheels, 3-3/8" back spacing:

You might try finding some at a junkyard, I picked up an additional stock wheel from a junkyard about 10 years ago. If you can't find any used wheels, here is a place that carries stock wheels:

I was actually looking into buying some wheels from Stockton Wheel in Stockton CA.

I'm trying to remove one of the tires to measure and see if they're actually only 5 inches wide or if they're 6...

If they are 6 I should be able to run the 31x10.5 no problems it would seem.

You can't go any more than about 3.75" backspacing with a solid front axle Toyota. It will rub steering components. You can get a 15x7 or 15x8 rim which will be wider than your stock rims, but don't buy anything with more than 3.75" backspacing.

Does anyone with 15 inch stock rims have any idea if there's enough room for the second stem, on a straight axle toy?
