new steering rack

So i have your typical leak wear your steering intermediate shaft meets the actual rack and I think i may just replace the whole thing while im at it. All the prices ive been quoted here in Canada have been around $700. I found one on ebay for $255 and I was wondering if it would be legit or not.

Here is a link to it.

Let me know what you guys think or if you have instructions on how to fix the leak.

Thanks

don't know the seller

2 year warranty seems decent. A competent shop should be able to rebuild the seals though- just to throw that out there.

If you live near a metropolitan area at all I would make some calls and see what they can quote you. You may be able to do better pricewise and get a better guarantee. This rack I presume to be interchangeable with similar year 4Runners.

I'm no mechanic and not pretending to be, but in Denver metro area for example we have several Power Steering related businesses and they know our Toyota racks pretty well.

One place I have talked to is Colorado Power Steering and they sell a rebuilt unit for about same price as your ebay seller. Then you pick the warranty you want and they adjust the price accordingly. Their install runs about $150 but you sound like you can do this yourself(?)

I presume you have already Google searched this very topic and being a 'Coma guy have also looked into TTORA web forum....

Ya im from Canada and there isn't really anyplace to do a rebuild near by. I decided to pull the trigger on a this rack so i guess we will see how it works out shortly.

Hopefully all goes well.

I am curious to see how this works out for you. Please keep us updated. Although I am the only one to comment there are likely others in the same situation.

Best of luck I hope that goes well.

Well i got the rack the other day and its all installed and drivable now. I am very happy with the rack and have no issues with it at all. Sure beats buying a brand new Toyota rack for $1200 cad! Racks are a bitch to install tho.

nice! well done. Hook us up with a picture if you get a chance of your ride or rack or both. No photo host is required any longer.

Thanks for the feedback once installed.

Rather than start a new thread, I thought I'd jump in here with my steering rack question. My 2000 4Runner was in for 120k mile service and I got a call that my power steering rack needed replaced (seal broke, dirt being drawn up, etc).

Dealership quoted me two options:

* Toyota rack - $1600 + tax
* Rack from Advanced Auto Parts - $1200 + tax

Both carry the nearly the same warranty. I find both of those numbers pretty staggering but I know racks are expensive. I have found on discounttoyotaparts.net I can get the Toyota rack for $750 delivered to Ohio.

I'm not a much of a wrench so I need someone to install it. Are those rates quoted by the dealer way too high or are they about right?

I have emailed the service dept asking what the shoptime/install rate is if I provide the rack.

Any insight greatly appreciated.

I also found the dealer prices WAY too steep so i went with a rack off ebay and installed it myself and it has worked great soo far.

a guaranteed unit runs about $400ish out here in Denver at Colorado Power Steering. Located in Denver-Erik is a contact name.

FWIW, I added a little bit of Auto-Rx to my PS when I noticed a leak. Well that was 2500 miles ago and the leak seems to have disappeared
