22R or 22RE?
If a 22RE, fix the exhaust leak, assuming it is anywhere near the O2 sensor, guess what happens? Exhaust leaks out and air leaks in, air has O2 in it, sensor sees that and tells the ECU the engine is running lean so add more fuel. See if there are any stored trouble codes in the ECU:

And some 22Rs have O2 sensors as well, not sure if an exhaust leak would have the same effect on them, though.

where is the O2 sensor on a 22R..i got my cat cut off about..3 weeks ago..and had a turbo muffler and turndown put in its place..cuz ever since i filled up at a gas station about a week ago...i've been gettin bad gas mileage..and i've changed the fuel filter..and its due for an oil change..might as well do plugs and wires too...mine has poor acceleration too..but i am running 31x10.50 swampers..but i dont remember it being this slow on acceleration..im gettin better than 8 mile to the gallon..but i used to get somewhere around 20 on the highway..

02 sensor on a 22r is on the exhaust manifold. No idea what it does tho, It's only on the cali-models. Theres no ECU for it to feed info into, must be something else, even then the mixture cant be changed on a carb.

hmmm

poor gas mileage on a 22r? leaking fuel pump? sticking float? running rich?

I have an '88 with the 22R. I keep mine very well maintained but at around 170,000 miles I started gettting around 15 mpg highway and it took me a while to figure out why. Everything was tuned up except I couldnt get the timing to hold perfectly steady when I put a light on it. It wasnt much but it danced around a little so I figured it had to be the timing chain since everything else I could think of was up to snuff. I took it to a shop and they quoted me $800 to do the work so I did it myself. Im no mechanic so it took me 3 days of mostly looking at it and rereading the manual over and over again but I got it done somehow. No leaks and it runs like a top and now has 208,000 miles on it. I recently had to give it to my oldest daughter because she needed a good vehicle. I just got a 97 4Runner and it has 150,000 on it and it feels like it needs a new timing belt on it to. So if youve got over a 100,000 mile on it, it could be the timing chain.
The only thing that makes me question that is that it sounds like yours started getting bad mpg after the exhaust work you had done. Its probably related to that but I would put a timing light on it anyways to see what it looks like. It quick and easy and doesnt cost anything.

what was the original tire size on the truck did you just go to bigger tires? That can play a part in the numers as well.
