To start I have 86 SR5 pickup with the 22rte engine (factory tubro model). The bottom end had started to make some noise So its time for a rebuild. Im going to keep the factory rods and crank and upgrade the pistons. I dont really know if i should go with hyperutectic or forged pistons. what are the pro's and con's of each? my target is 15lbs of boost.

Depending on the manufacturer of the hypertectics you may or may not be able to use those pistons for boost. It merely depends on the specs for the pistons.

Forged pistons on the other hand are pretty much bomb proof. You will have to go to (or I should say, you SHOULD go to) a forged piston in the event that you want to beef up the engine for serious HP, IE Nitrous, and outrageous boost pressure.

If your not planning on having a 300 hp engine, then the forged pistons may simply be overkill for your engine, and ultimately your wallet.

the company that carried the pistons was Keith Black. Im going to call them tomorrow and see what they have to say. I would like to go forged but i dont really see this truck making that much power so spending that amount of money isnt really logical from a financial perspective.

Go with hypereutectic - forged is overkill unless you plan on running very high boost

when you say "very high boost" do you mean over 25lbs? Ideally i would like to run around 15lbs of boost. Maybe a few pounds more if everything sounds good.

as long as your tune is good and you don't have excessive detonation, you should be good. I've seen people run slightly higher boost than that on stock cast pistons (not Toyota though) with no durability problems

Detonation/ping is what will cause catastrophic failure in the piston

Keith Black makes an excellent product, if you decide to go hyperutecitic, go with them. I've ran them in numerous applications and they're flawless.

I've heard on a Camry forum (so it might be wrong), but don't you have to machine the block different for forged pistons because of different expansion rates of the metal?

thanks for the opinions, Im going to call them tomorrow if they say its fine with 15lbs of boost under good tuned engine ill get a set and post back when its up an running. I also saw a piston and rod kit on ebay that included: eagle H-beam rods, ARP Bolts, and Nippon Racing pistons. Never heard of Nippon and cant find a review anywhere. Ever heard of that company? they say the pistons are made in japan...... sent the seller a message asking if they were forged. the kit was $500.

Yep, with forged pistons you have to run a larger piston/cylinder clearance which leads to noise (piston slap) and extra wear until the engine gets hot

Im a new member to yotatech, i have a 93 4runner 3.0 and i plan to rebuild the motor. Ive heard the hypereutectic pistons are good but not sure what kit to buy. Any advise on what to go with?

Just go with the basic cast pistons and you'll be fine, there's no reason to go with anything else on that engine

Keith black is good stuff.
A friend runs custom made pistons in his racing engine..
He has to keep it over 2500RPM or the piston will flop sideways in the cylinder lol.
