Exhaust manifold gasket leak
Hey guys, I've got leaks from the manifold gasket down to the tailpipe... Normally I deal with it by turning up the radio and keeping the windows rolled up
... But I just took the top off today to do a diy bikini and realize that I need to fix it if I want my children to be birth defect free with the amount of fumes being poured out.
I'm planning on adding a new free flow exhaust and was wondering if I could reuse my old exhaust manifold and just slap a new gasket in there. I know getting headers would be ideal but they are out of my price range for now.
A friend of mine said the manifold is probably warped and that I would need a new manifold/headers anyway. Blowin smoke? I trust you yotatech, lead me in your ways.

86 4runner 22re. Do you need special tools to see if it's warped or can you eyeball it?

Eyeballing will not be sufficient. You'll need a precision straight edge and thickness gauge measuring diagonally. Your local machine shop can inspect and resurface it fairly inexpensively.

I have seen new manifolds that are reasonably priced somewhere, just dont remember where I seen them at. I am not a fan of headers as they have a ticking noise on the ones I had and tend to leak. Like mentioned before, check your local machine shop to surface it.

Well I guess I'll yank it off and take it to a shop. Rock auto has a manifold for $65. Do I need to buy new bolts for the manifold? the original ones look pretty rusted and beat.

I think that's the Dorman manifold that is made to OEM specs. It looks identical. I was looking at it recently. I also have an exhaust leak. Can anyone comment whether these are decent? I don't really want to spend the $$$ on a header.

I would replace the studs and nuts from Toyota. They sell two types of studs. One is like a 25% to 75% ration and one is a 50/50. I suggest the 50/50. They really arent to bad on prices either. The studs usually can be reused depending on condition, but buy new nuts.
Nervo19...A friend of mine does a lot of work on Toyotas on the side and I can ask him if Dormans are good. Might take a few days to see him though.

Cool thanks Terry! Im headed to the dealer anyway to get some seals/gaskets for my hubs because Im upgrading the brakes and need new rotors and have to pull all that crap out.
The dorman manifold is only 65 bucks!! Im going to try to slap a new gasket on there and see if It will fix it, but if not I may just get the dorman.
