bang for the buck - engine mods
I registered yesterday, and the day before that, yesterday, and today I have been searching the forums looking at various engine mods. so far it appears the most popular mods are, in on particular order, VAFM, headers, and IRS mod (some doing the swiss cheese mod to their airbox as well).
I need 'bang for the buck' upgrades. things that are extremely cheap, but that have results.
so far I see IRS as the best 'bang for the buck' mod followed by VAFM if you can get the parts cheaply enough, and have the expertise to truly tune if needed (that means it is proably out for me). am I missing anything?
headers will come down the line if for no other reason than to decrease the chance of blowing a head gasket to me the other benefits are good, but second to this benefit.

well - if I put the IRS under my hood it would even be more useless I presume. what is the stop size of the exhaust?
I've seen a few VAFM mods - one out of a celica, supra (not the one for the 22RE) I have the links stored off. any of them that swap straight in, but depending on the post they all seemed like that may require some tuning.

exhaust & headers are out of the question for now. I would really prefer a set of shorty ceramic coated, but I really don't see any good options for one. I prefer the torque out of a good set of shorty headers. I will do them, but not yet (out of the budget)
priority - doing a few mods for a total cost of under $100 for all mods. (middle aged guy going back to college on a budget, this is my daily driver) next priority - getting my transmission rebuilt so it goes into reverse all the time (5 spd). after that I can worry about exhaust / headers. (I can get by with the transmission they way it is until I can graduate college in early November, and get a job). I could probably get a used one cheaper, but depending on the deal I would almost prefer the peace of mind with a new rebuild (have a very good shop I trust).
another mod I was considering with the ISR for now was a coil. I've had good luck with coil upgrade / power on my old GM vehicles. looking at the stock coil on the Toyota I'm thinking this is an easy / cheap please to upgrade that may give me more power.

All the older Yotas I have owned and others I have driven had trouble going into reverse sometimes. Try going into second gear then into reverse. Its a habit for me now...
Also could be as simple as the shifter seat bushing.

I'll have to do some searches on that seat bushing, and see if I can't find something. thanks for the tip on going into 2nd. I've been able to get it in by trying other gears, but hadn't really made a correlation yet between getting it into revere, and what specific gear to try first.
I presume the bushing you are referring to is right on top basically between the gear shift & the transmission per say?

Ya, it goes on the bottom of the shift lever, AFAIK. I couldnt find it in the FSM for either the G58 (what I have) or the R150F (what you have). I know when the bushing wears out they can make the shifter sloppy and sometimes not stay in gear. Pretty sure it can possible interfere with shifting too....

I'm wondering if that is the problem then it has slipped out of 5th gear on me a few times when I was going up hills, and it was under load before I down shifted to 4th. I'll check it out thanks for the tip.
