Its possible to do it while retaining the auto ecu...you disengage the park safety switch so the engine always thinks the tranny is in neutral.

lots of good info here:

Also send a message to Jason, username dntsdad on this forum. I believe he has done this swap before.
Ive got my manual tranny sitting out in the shop waiting for my auto to take a dump. Best of luck

i did it on my 91 and still run an auto ecu and just by passed the park safety switch and then figured out how to do the wiring on it for the 4wd to work when u change it inside, but u might have to change it up a little since im not sure what differences the trans have for wiring. also to have the cruise control to work after u do the swap there is a wire u will need to cut to make it think its not in park anymore, i found that one on here, now here is a link to my right up on the wiring for the trans and 4wd.

i hear talk that you wont be able to smog it buddy, if you keep the auto ecu and trick into neutral it apparently flashes codes like no tomorrow. just what i've heard at least. i live in cali as well, i looked into it. talked to a ref.

u need to pull the overdrive light it blinks but that's it. there is a way to also bypass the park neutral switch but i just have not done it and that is to run wire from it to the switch for the clutch pedal and then back and then it wont think its in park all the time.

You will also need the transfer case The auto unit is all one piece

and a different rear driveshaft or you can have yours shortened

Also the crossmember and the mount that goes on it

you do need a different drive shaft, the ones in the auto are 40 1/2 long and and u will need a 42 1/2 long one, when u get a trans try and get it all together transfer and tranny. also the cross members are the same and the front drive shafts are the same. also what gearing do u have right now in the rig now? oh yeah u will want to go and get 8grade bolts for the flywheel and bolts for the clutch to flywheel.
