91 4runner Front Differential removal question.

Sup Folks
I will be removing my front diff carrier this weekend (A.D.D.) to have it rebuilt. My question is, can I still drive the truck without the front diff and CV's installed? given everything is put back into place - CV and Diff

I think you can drive it. Might want to remove the front drive shaft also, just to it doesn't fall down. Essentially, your turning it into a prerunner 4runner.

I wouldn't run without the front differential on a truck with ADD. Why? Because the CVs turn regardless of whether or not your in 4wd or not. On a truck with manual hubs, you can simply tie them (CV's) up and leave them in since they don't turn without the hubs locked. But even with the Differential and Tubes in, the Axle shafts will still turn and there will be nothing inside the case to hold them up since the carrier will be out. They will be inside the housing pretty much flopping around.

Yes you can pull them (CV) out, but you leave a huge hole in the spindle that will allow dirt, mud, water etc etc all the way into the hub.

Good call on the open spindles, didnt think of that part. I was assuming that he was removing the CVs.

Cool thanks, good to know I can still drive it in 2WD minus the diff and CV's (Temporarily of course). Originally I was under the impression that the spindle/hub needed the CV bolted in to keep them sandwiched together similar to a FWD car.
