85 4Runner wheel cylinder removal problem

Hello everyone. I am the proud owner of a 1985 4Runner. However, I have been having some issues getting my rear wheel cylinders out. There is also very limited information on these. There does not seem to be enough clearance between the backing plate and the axle flange to remove them. It looks as though I might have to pull the axle, but I REALLY do NOT want to do that. The factory service manual makes it look like pie, but it is not that easy. Look at the pics below. Any suggestions?

Pulled the axle tonight. Now I have to press it off of the backing plate. I thought that it was going to be a pretty easy job. It is turning more complicated at every step. I think this probably had a little to do with the axle changes in 86 (along with the IFS). I also can't find a new star adjuster. NOBODY carries them anymore.

1. Remove wheel.
2. Remove drum.
3. Remove axle.
4. Press backing plate off of axle shaft.
5. Replace wheel cylinder.
6. Put it all back together (I hope).

Let me know if this sounds correct.

Just tackled this issue myself...the trick turned out to be the removal of the bleeder screw. That allowed the WC to come right out. Sure would have been nice to have that bit of info in the FSM.

It took me a while but I did the same thing. They came right out. Have you been able to find brake adjusters? I can't find any new ones for my 85. I just used a lot of anti-sieze on the threads.
