22re Overheating
I just bought a 93 Pickup for what I thought was a steal. It has 96k original miles. The first time I drove the truck more than an hour it began to run hot I got home before the temp ever hit the red. I found some sighns of coolant in the oil so I checked the common timing chain cover problem I was right it had broken guides. I replaced timing cover and chain along with water pump and thermostat and radiator cap. I drove it and after an hour temp started to rise again it was low on coolant I pulled the thermostat and added coolant and the problem continues and I am starting to get milky stuff on the oil cap. I notice the radiator seems to have alot of presure in it even if it sits overnight and I go pull the radiator cap and there is presure there Is that normal? This is my 2nd radiator cap in a week with same results. Sorry about the long post. Thanks in advance

Thats what I was kind of thinking but hoping my thoughts were wrong She runs like a champ until the temp gauge goes up. Any one else have any thoughts?

I'm betting its the headgasket. A compression check, look at the plugs for one thats really clean... but, with that kind of trouble, my time and effort would go to a total top end... just pull the pan off, pull the head, have it tested, perhaps milled a LITTLE BIT, etc etc. Put it all back together carefully. You should be good for a while...

Im not a mechanic and rely on common sense and a manual although I have read it over and over I don't think I am capable of trying to change the head gasket any idea what someone should charge me.

Timing Chain when loose can slap the timing cover silly till it causes a crack and leak. Damage may have been done before you changed the broken guides.
It's probably that or the head gasket you can buy a "combustion leak tester" and check it through the radiator cap for a head leak pretty simple test. The kit is like 30 bucks available at the local parts store.

The guides were not completely broken one was good and the other was half gone I didn't even know they were broken until I pull the oil pan down. There wasn't that much slack. If chain hit the head would a gasket do the job or will it need to be replaced?

It certainly sounds like a headgasket. They aren't terrible to change and I would get someone to do a leak down test before you pull the head so you know exactly where the problem is at.

there have got to be a few shops down there.
