1984 4Runner am I wasting my money on this parts list??

I have a 1984 4runner that I have been trying to buy a suspension lift for. There are so many out there its crazy (skyjacker/trailgear/oldman emu/all pro ect) I have not found any good write ups yet help would be appreciated!! I will not be around any rocks, just need something reliable for trailriding. Also will I need driveshafts or a hi pinion setup for for the new lift kit.

My parts list as of right now

1. All pro 3'' lift kits front/rear with HI-Steer stuff -1700
2. Yukon 529's front/rear-Marlin Crawler -500
3. Grizzly lockers front/rear-Marlin Crawler-800
4. 33 M/T Baja Claws-900
5. Burfield axles front only- Marlin Crawler-500
6. 86 steering box for High Steer-Advance Auto Parts-185
7. New 22R longblock -Napa Auto Parts-1750
8. Clutch Kit 1200-Marlin Crawler-200
9. NO body lift

Total $6535

I would say the lift kit can be done cheaper than that for a 3 in
the gears and lockers are good unless you find used ones cheaper
I would look at www.treaddepot.com before buying tires
And I just had my motor rebuilt .040, from oilpan to head for $860 with a 12 month warranty
And welcome to Yotatech. Do some searching on here before buying anything. Good luck, and atleast you have a plan started.

I would not buy a long block from napa, and for that price alone! Search for 22r long block suppliers, many out there to choose from and for quite a bit cheaper...

have heard good and bad from them

http://22reperformance.com/22RE%20Pe...20Engines.html
waiting on a motor for a buddy from these guys, heard good stuff.

Just a couple of examples, you will see the motors are about what your looking to spend, but I believe you will get a superior product for the same price, and some minor upgrades, with options for more

Good Luck!

You have an impressive list there. Fill in your location though, and you may find guys who live relatively close who have a few of the things you need. Just as an example, the steering box from an 86. I have one in my shed that you could have much cheaper if you were nearby.

Also, you could save some more money by going elsewhere for the engine. Are you dead set on going new longblock? I'm asking because the impression that I get is that many "mass builders" will use parts for the bottom line only, not necessarily the best parts. With some careful shopping, you could shave $1000. and pick up a running motor that would provide years of service.

Finally, I will be following your build. Sounds like a sweet one.

Plan on that list growing another $1000 easy by the time all the installs are finished.

For that much money, just pick up something used off CL that has all the work done already. Lots of them on there, people are dumping their wheeling rigs all the time for WAY cheap. I have over $15,000 in mine but it wouldn't sell for more than $5000 right now.

I have thought about buying one used, but mine has 96k original miles and perfect body. I wish I had so much cash I didn't have to worry about dropping 7k on mine ) I guess there is something to say about doing myself also!! THanks for the replies!!!

It only has 96K miles on it It's just getting broke in. How do you know you need a new motor? I bet you just need to give it a good tune up, put a new timing chain on and maybe put a new head gasket on while your at it and that thing will last another 100K +.

No doubt man, that's a baby! Unless you have a rod through the block, save your money... And If I could do it over again I'd steer clear of Trailmaster lifts, Broken several A arm drops. Pick something beefy up front, it's going to get knocked around even on the trails.

I think you should really define what you want to do with the rig. Is flex/articulation going to be important? I wheel mostly trails and articulation is awesome. What is your level of fab skills and access to tools? Allpro doesn't have 3" springs. Its a good time to install dual cases too, as you will have to mod drivelines already. If you can swap out spring hangers then you can rotate pinion angles.

DC is very right add at least a $1000 if not more.

I want to run sand maybe twice a year and mud running on moderate difficulty trails. I have plasma cutter, welders ect so fab work is a cake walk for me. If rough country makes it happen I'm ok with that lift, but if I have to spend another 800 bucks to get trail gear I will spend the money. I have heard tons of horror stories with diff lifts so whoever has the experience tell me what to buy and thats what I will purchase. Also are 33's the way to go or should i go up to 35's.??

Sorry, the engine main bearings went bye bye don't know how but thats why the individual sold it to me . I figure with Napas engine its guaranteed for 3 years unlimited mileage so if it goes bad who cares, and pulling the engine is easy. If it lasts 3 years for 1700 bucks with what i'm going to put it through and dies after 3years I'll buy another one. Just my take on the situation.

If you use 5:29's with 33" tires your engine will be screaming at highway speeds.

You say fabbing stuff is a cake walk so why not just do rears up front and chevys out back? Way cheaper then an all-pro lift.

Just a thought.

True

Chevys would be a good way to go and probably just as good as an allpro lift.
