17's for an 86 IFS (and late sas) 4x4 questions

Okay, so I just scored a set of 35x12.5x17 tires for FREE and I need to get some 17's so I can use them. That's not the reason I want 17's, though. I want 17's because I want to run 37's after I swap in a solid axle to my truck, and everyone pretty much only carries 37's for 17's. And people seem to like the amount of sidewall from the 17x37 combo (Not too much, not too little.)

So here's my set up:

86 toyota pickup
22R
1.5" BJ spacers (no torsion bar lift)
3" body lift
3" longer shackles in rear
ZUK coil spring mod in the rear (gearinstalls.com)
No wheel spacers

Now I've run 3.75" back spaced 15x8.5 rims with 33x12.5x15 wrangler mtr's with kevlar with absolutely no problems, and 4.25" backspaced 16x8 rims with 305/70/16 with no problems as well. I just don't know how much backspacing is permissible with IFS or with a solid axle swap.

The rims I want are 17x9 ion alloy 174 series. They say they have 0 offset, which I thought meant they would have 4.5" backspacing, but apparently I don't understand that correctly, because they go on to say they have 5" of backspacing. I'm guessing 5" is way too much, but I just thought I'd ask. I also wanted to ask if there's any 17's anyones running, because 4.5" backspacing is the best I can find for 17's for my price range (under $150 per rim). I figure if nothing else, I could run wheel spacers, but dont' want to just for the thought of the stress and risk of breaking they come with.

Any comments are greatly appreciated!

The only thing is, I'll never buy steel wheels again, after my last set started rusting out 2 weeks after I bought them.

What back spacing do you have?

Ya they salt it like there's no tomorrow (p*sses me off), and I can only find steel rims with 3.75 back spacing. All the aluminum 17's dont go below 4.5 unless I have $300/rim to blow (and I don't). I'd like to know if 5" would work. If 4.5's don't either, then I mite as well get 5's and wheel spacers. I'll have to use wheel spacers with the SAS anyways...

aluminum rims aren't cheap, that's why most off-roaders use steel. Powdercoat the steel wheels or get ones that already are and you won't have too many issues with rusting.

IIRC steel wheels are actually stronger than aluminum ones anyway.

Well they also weigh a lot more. For my aluminum 15's, they were 18lbs and the steel 16's were 32lbs. The 17 aluminums are only 24lbs.

Roger Brown said 4.5" works for IFS and 3.75" works for SAS.
