Whining rebuilt alternator on 87 PU. 22R engine
Having replaced the alternator with a rebuild one from Carquest, I noticed the whining issue. There is only one belt and that belt drives both the fan and the alternator. Replaced the belt and that wasn't it. Ended up returning the alternator and bought another rebuilt one from Rock Auto (ACDelco). Same whining issue with this alternator as well. The belt has been properly tensioned. I can return this alternator and get another one or may be the issue lies with something else that I have not thought of. Reaching out to the Forum Community, do you buy new Toyota alternators or grab rebuilt ones and if the latter, what brand do you go with?
Thanks,
Matt

I would only use Denso.
If you have a Denso alternator its pretty easy to replace bearings and brush holder. If you need the ic regulator than its better to just get a replacement reman.

Part number from Denso should be 210-0106. But please go to Denso Find My Part and check. Amazon has one of the better prices, and they usually don’t require a core return. Availability can be an issue at time though.

Did you ever try putting the old belt back on?

I also like McGeorge Toyota. Got me better prices for the past couple of purchases compared to Toyota Part Deal. So to date, I compare total cost between that, Lakeland and TPD.
Reman by Denso in the U.S.A. $143 Plus tax from NAPA. Excludes core refund.
Already installed and equipped with a splash shield to keep it clean.

I would take the unit to a store that offers free testing to see it makes the whining noise there.
Are you sure its the alternator making the noise? Anything with a pulley can make a whining noise.

The noise is certainly more noticeable at higher engine RPM. It could be the pulley on the alternator, the alternator fan, brushes or perhaps the bearings. The noise wasn't there with the old alternator. Both rebuilt alternators are showing similar noise levels. I have used McGeorge in the past. They are pretty good when it comes to getting OEM parts. Alas I am stuck with what I have for now.

You can always put Koyo/naichi bearings in your alt.
