Not to hijack the thread, but if a vehicle is a "collector vehicle" does that mean it doesnt need an emissions test? Is this for every state, or just Rhode Island?

Collector vehicle simply means that the vehicle made it to 25yrs old. In RI, and most of New England, they stop testing them for emissions as they feel the vehicle is too old to find replacement parts for the emissions. They also feel it's too old for a modern Auto Tech or mechanic to know how to properly work on its systems. Therefore the mechanic may only be able to make things worse. In Mass it became such a problem trying to teach the new kids how to work on the older cars, that they made it so vehicles over 10 years old don't need the smog tests. (I'll never understand that, the older the car the easier I find it to work on, as most folks have agreed)

At 30 years they consider the vehicle classic, and it no longer has to have any specific safety tests other than lights, brakes, and chassis points.

When I took my 71 bug in for inspection a few months ago, I didn't even bring the car. Brought in the registration paperwork. The guy asked me how old the brakes were and if everything worked. Then punched in the info, and gave me a sticker.

You would have to check in your actual state. I know alot of em are doing things like this now.

Do they have a cut off point at all? In any year?

See that's what I thought it would be in most places. It only makes sense that we've been hammered on with these vehicles by our respective states for 25yrs...bout time they cut us a break. lol

I didn't see one. Under exempt vehicles, it listed hotrods and farm trucks. No collectors vehicles.

It did have some cutoff dates for 1981, but I'm not sure what those were for. I'm getting conflicting info, because on the official DMV website it doesnt list collectors vehicles as being exempt, but on another website for Colorado it does list them as not needing an emissions test.

-edit-

just an update. I was doing some more research, and in my local area, all the counties don't require emissions testing. Looks like one of the only few counties that do are the ones that serve Denver and Colorado Springs.

heh, yeah. I'm still trying to get it up to emission specs just for the sake of being able to breathe clean air while I drive. Right now it stinks like burned gas fumes and oil.

A new muffler and O2 sensor will definitely help.

utah emissions law

I just found this thread and wondered about emissions in the salt lake city, all vehicles 1967 and newer need to pass emissions. I think that it is a load of crap. It sucks dealing with laws in Utah. While my brother lives in Washington state and he just has bring the paper work and he gets the tags.

EDIT: unless i am completely misreading the site, which is possible.

Dang I feel sorry for you guys with emissions, etc. We don't have any inspection whatsoever. No lights, emissions, nada. They send a notice saying your yearly registration is due, you send in $78, and they send you a sticker. That's it for the year. My truck hasn't had a cat since I've owned it, and that will be 4 years in April lol.

20 years old is a classic in Maryland and you don't have to do any of the testing but if you don't pass emissions the first time $14 you can bring a second time for Free and if you don't pass then you can show them $400 or more in receipts showing you have done $400 worth of emissions work and they will give you a 2 year pass.

Yea, RI does that $400 dollar deal too, but only at state sanctioned stations. Only difference is, if you do the $400 deal, you gotta go yearly, so it's more like 800bucks per sticker.
