Toasted clutch?

So I just got done pulling my new clutch and its pretty much toast...it was making a ginding sound when engaged so I thought it was the TB ...Wrong!

Pressure plate

Aaannnnd flywheel

This is a brand new clutch with maybe 10 runs and 5k on it?

I'm still running 4.10s with 35's which is half my problem but I don't feel as if I ride my clutch alot..

My question is, do you guys think it would be worth it to run a marlin clutch setup with stock gears? Or should I just buy another cheapie to burn until I get gears?

Looks fine. Nothing wrong with any of those parts that I can see. Hardly any wear at all on that clutch plate, which would be worn the most.

You need to worry about finding the real cause of that grinding...

Good luck!!!

EDIT: The pressure plate looks like the throwout bearing has been a bit rough on it. Now that I look at it a little more closely. If those grooves on the tips of those diaphram/release springs are as deep as they look from here...probably a shot TB is what you were hearing then. BTW, you might need a new pressure plate too now. Depends on how bad they really are..

6. INSPECT DIAPHRAGM SPRING FOR WEAR
Using calipers, measure the diaphragm spring for depth
and width of wear.
Maximum:
Depth 0.6 mm (0.024 in.)
Width 5.0 mm (0.197 in.)

Well the flywheel wasn't warped.and cracked when I changed it the first time..so I've heated it up quite a bit...and the clutch didn't have alot of wear but seemed like the fabric was torn...the throw out bearing spins freely and so does the pilot..so I'm unsure of anything els besides the pressure plate that would grind...I can take more pics if you guys may think it's somthing els

Well, I ran my stock Toyota clutch disc untill it was so thin it would grab any more. Replaced the whole thing flywheel, pressure plate and all with an aftermarket kit(Exedy). Then about 5000 miles later blew that clutch disc up(half/one side of the friction material grenaded). Then bought a new OEM clutch disc. Which I've had apart to look at since installingabout another 5000 miles ago. And looking at your cluth disc, it looks like it's in as good or better shape than mine was/is. In fact the damn things both look nearly brand new(in terms of wear)...IMO. And I can't see no cracks or warpage to that flywheel neither, but that pic don't show the whole thing. Looks like a used flywheel...

Anywho..

Grinding while shifting almost alway comes from inside the transmission itself. Even if clutch related. Which it doesn't appear to be.

Yeah I do agree the clutch isn't that worn but I figured the grooves worn in the pressure plate were no good...and it only grinds when the clutch is engaged...drives and shifts fine..sorry if I was misleading

to be honest, we need to see both sides of the clutch disc and the pressure plate mating surface.

rule of thumb is any time you're in there and in doubt, the pilot and release bearings get released. better to have all new in there than something that seems like sort of kinda new and needs replaced in 15k miles

Alright ill get some more pics when I get home...and everything is new it was replaced 5k ago...just don't wanna spend another $80 bucks just to do it again in 5k, if spending the $200 on a good setup will last alot longer ill go that route...but don't wanna get burned on that too

looking at just the flywheel, i see it overheated and has grooves in it. shouldn't have grooves if the flywheel was resurfaced or new just 5000 miles ago.

Looks like normal wear. Just like mine when I pulled it, was slipping excessively. I replaced it with a marlin clutch and its been awesome ever since. Biggest perk in my opinion it the soft clutch pedal with plenty of grabing power. Get some gears ASAP. But you won't be disappointed with the new clutch.

You should repalce that flywheel too...considering the fact that it's pretty well worn...and a new one is always better than a resurfaced one. Like I said though, the clutch disc looks great!
