Tacoma Axle Under '91 Pickup Questions

There is a person just 45mins north of me selling a complete axle with the TRD E-Locker. I'm curious if anyone has heard of or done this swap? I can gather the obvious advantages, but are there any disadvantages? The axle has already been under his '86 4runner for 1 year, but he is upgrading to a Ford 9 inch and something else uup front to handle larger tires.

The price is very right too ... $500 with him helping to do the swap out and he said he would take my axle. I would only need to wire up the locker and it would be done.

What do yoou all think? Buy or Let Go? Pros? Cons?

I'd look at the axle, and make sure its not bent, cracked, etc...Make sure its in decent shape.

Next, check out the ratios, see if you need to regear your front at the same time. Only disadvantage will be cost of regear added to either the front or the rear diff. This will go for 200 or so for the gears, 100 or so for an instal kit and whatever you can get labor for, usually about 200 for a single diff pulled from the truck already.

If all that is going to be cool, then heck yes. Do it ASAP.

that will be a problem too i suppose, hadn't thought too much about it.

If it will be too much of a problem, then just buy the axle, pull the locker, mod your housing, and put it in your truck. Still way ahead of the game

I have an e-locker housing in my 86 and by my measurements the e locker housing is 2" wider overall, 1" per side. I would buy it and if the width bugs you, mod your old housing like AxleIke said.

Thaks for the tips. I'll have a chat with him this evening and hopefully work something out. I really need to work on making my truck run correct before anything. I guess if things don't work out then it's on to some other idea.

Thanks Again

I'm sure it is but something as simple as 2-3 inches isn't that great of a number. I could throw some wheel spacers on the front if that's my biggest issue.
