You won’t be able to get the timing correct until you get the o2 sensor situation corrected.

my gramps toyo's o2 sensor are unpluged and yet it still has more nut than my truck???

1. Don't JB weld anything. It won't hold up to the temps and it will stink like ****!

2. Once again, I have heard of many of these trucks running without an O2 sensor. No, it's not ideal, but it can work.

3. Have you checked ignition timing yet. Jump the terminals, that set's the base timing, regardless of whether or not the O2 sensor is hooked up.

4. You keep comparing your gramp's truck to your truck. Is the gearing the same? Tire size the same? Body style the same? Any of these can make a difference in available power.

yes, his is an 87 mine is a 88, 22re 5 speed. same exact truck but mine has sun roof =P

That sunroof creates allot of wind resistance that’s probably why his is faster.

There's a gear code on the VIN plate in the driver side door jam. It will be in the lower right hand corner of the sticker, and will start with an F or a G, followed by 3 digits. If your truck is 4WD, it will look like Gxxx. You can compare and see if they are the same number, and if you want, you can run a search and find the gear codes listed as to what they are.

Where was the timing at before adjustment? I'm glad to hear it gave you some improvement. Check the valve adjustment and get the O2 sensor hooked back in, and you should be back up to full power.

Back to comparing the two trucks, there are a few other variables that I thought of besides the gearing. Mileage, the way it has been driven, even the way it was broken in can all play a difference in power.

well his motor has 300k on it, mine has 137k, and i think his motor is from an 94, not quite shure. i will check that door jam little latter today.

As fare as the timeing isue was i think wen we took the head off we just set time by how it ran, it idles at 1.1k now but it has a lot more nut.

I would adjust that idle back down to around 750. Glad to hear the power is back closer to where it's supposed to be.

If his motor is from a 94, then sure it's going to make a little bit more power. They had made some improvements here and there from 87 / 88 to 94. I am quite jealous that you only have 137K on an 88!

wen the idel speed was down to 800 900 it had no power. yep 136k mile truck for 700 bucks=)

my gramps bought his 4x4 for 300 with a bad 3.0 motor, he had his 2w drive 1994 yota that had bad frame and 300k+ miles into the 4x4 =) needs a throttle sensor but still runs great, doesnt burn any oil. i will get some pics of it,

Idle speed adjustment shouldn't have any noticeable effect on engine power. Was that before the timing was set? Now that the timing is set, you should be able to turn the idle back down and still have the power.

no it just seems like it has a turbo =P or a 2 stroke dirt bike wen it hit power band =P

i think im going to leave the timing the way its is for now untill i put the o2 sensor back in.

That's interesting. By adjusting the idle speed screw, all you've done is opened up the bypass valve in the throttle body more........which is only really functional or doing it's job at idle. The majority of air for intake during throttle operations is normally through the throttle valve. So, the fact that you're experiencing more power with the idle screw opened wider means to me you're running too rich; air to fuel ratio.........that sort of the thing. Hmm....oxygen sensor or vacuum leak or air filter or throttle sensor adjustment or plugs....etc, etc. Although, yayfortrees statement is right.........idle adjustment shouldn't have that much if any effect on power.

i had the same problem on my 95 3.0 when i did the head gaskets. For me it ended up being a vacuum line, so i would check and make sure they are all plugged in and in good condition.

funny this is like my 22re rightnow... kinda lol i get sputtering for a few seconds then it has power? and if i gun it it goes fine? i found and exhaust leak before the o2 and cat and it threw a code for my afm so im slowly trying to figure that out.

i would go get an exhaust shop to cut and weld you o2 sensor in, im betting on that big time. but also check the ignition timing and actual engine timing ;P
