definitely gotta go with my 3.0! like others have said, it gets a bad wrap and the auto is what really hurts it. yes, i had to replace the headgasket, which wasn't that expensive at all, at about 75k but other than that i've never had a problem with it. as long as you keep up routine maintenance it'll run forever. and about the crowded engine bay, its not like the v-6 is that big of an engine! its more about all the other bull˟˟˟˟ in the engine bay that makes it crowded. the only thing i've struggled with in terms of accessibility were the stupid spark plugs, other than that i can get to just about everything i've needed to. oh, and the low end torque is awesome, esp. since i've got the 4.88s! doesn't help with gas mileage though.

ChickenLover,
do you seriously get over 300 a tank on the interstate? i've never gotten over 250 at best!

I had a 92 6cyl. For 9 months I liked the power vs. the 22RE. But I would take the 22RE option as my first choice any day! I’m not a power hungry guy… I like my FJ40’s 2F too, but Gas mileage sucks… My daily driver is a 84 4X4 p/u with the 22R. Great running, but I wish it came with a 22RE. I just bought a 95 4runner with a 7M-GTE in it, I should have it by Jan, so I’m hopping this will balance all the worlds for me! If it does…. The 22re has the best engine mount set up for installing a 5M-GT to 7M-GTE engine!

I have a 3.0 and have no problems. It may be a little slow goin', but like people have said, it is not a sports car. I can scream away from my friend in his lifted 95 YJ with 33s, stock gearing, and HO 4.0 I6, but hey, it's a Jeep. BTW as far as gas mileage, I can manage to get close to 450-475 km (280-295 mi) a tank in town and about 530-550 km (329-342 mi) on the open road, but I could probably squeeze out 580 km (360 mi) with the tailgate down (haven't tried yet). Oh, and this is a stock 92 Xtracab 4WD with 31" tires and a 5 speed, but no AC (don't need it up here in Canada).

dude how do you defrost your windows when they start to fog up?? I've always wondered how you'd do it in a truck with no a/c cause when I try to defrost mine with just the fan it hardly works or makes it even worse...

I have owned 3 trucks and 2 Runners with a combination of 22re's and 3VZ's. I wouldn't even consider having a 22re over a 3VZ. I have never had a problem with the 3VZ's I owned as far a power, fuel economy, or reliability. In fact my 22RE's got lower mileage in mountain terrain where I live.

i bet the 3VZE wouldn't be too bad of a motor if you could find a way to get rid of that god-awful intake manifold and use some ARP head studs...hmm, might have to pick one up and figure out how to put a 38mm weber on it...

22RE/3vze

Drove a 22re in my 93 shortbed for ten years. Minor water pump leak and blown head gasket the only mechanical problems in that whole time. Weak on the road, an embarrasment on grades (55mph in 3rd). But in low range you could pull a house. My 89 4runner's unmodded 3vze has enough power to be satisfactory on the road, and if I drive like a granny, I get decent gas mileage. But it's been rebuilt once, and cost $450 for a valve adjustment two years ago and needs a valve job now...plus its timing chain is made of rubber
