Looking at buying a 90' Yota pickup. Has extended cab. Im would want to do a solid axle swap and it would be a trail only rig. Would this truck be a good cantidate? Is there anythin inparticular I need to be looking for?

I'd say it looks like a great candidate. You may want to consider an older 4runner that has a solid axle in it already, it may be a much cheaper and easier way to go about the whole deal. Otherwise, lots of people have done SAS swaps on 3rd generation pickups. I would get a manual with a V6 engine, that leaves you with a stronger manual transmission that can accept a later toyota 3.4 liter V6 very easily and the lexus 4.0l V8 with a bit more complications. Also you can stuff a 4.3l or 5.7l GM engine in with readily available swap parts. The 22re (4 banger) equipped trucks came with a weaker transmission thats less suitable to a more powerful engine swap. However, the 22re 4x4 came with a gear driven transfer case thats widely considered far better than the 3.0l V6's chain drive transfer case. If you are going to be rock climbing on a budget, I say get the 22re with the better transfer case and just gear down to a real crawl. The 3VZE 3.0l V6 is bad on gas and has head gasket problems, even though its usually at around 200,000 miles. The 22re is less powerful but nearly bulletproof. Most people that get far enough into their project (and wallet!) to put a solid axle on, are going to get sick and tired of BOTH of the stock engine options soon enough. Plenty of adapters and kits have been made (like the ones from marlin crawler) to put the stouter transfer cases up to the back of almost any 4x4 toyota transmission. Essentially, what I'm saying is that if you are going to be building on a budget and not swapping engine, I'd say go 4 cylinder 22re. If you are considering swapping out the engine and would be putting a bunch of money into the drivetrain anyway, go with the V6. Automatics = booooo!
