Is it my blower motor or resistors? 86 4Runner

Hey all -

Well my truck has been running quite well lately, but tonight I was driving along and the heater kicked off.

Background:

Last year I replaced the resister coils because the fan would only run on low & high. Got all my speeds back so all was well. About 3 months later I turned on the blower and got NO response from any speeds. Somehow I discovered that lightly bumping the fan area would make the unit turn on, and it had nothing to do with the fan speed position.

Fast forward to tonight - The light (and even a bit more than light) tapping on the fan unit did nothing to get it to turn back on.

So I pulled out the resistors, and hooked up the ohm meter. There is resistance across each and every combination of the 4 plugs, but I'm not sure what it is supposed to be.

So what do you all suspect? Resistor pack or has my fan finally given up the ghost?

Fan indeed. Picked up a unit at the local auto parts store. Box said VDO, sticker on the unit says Siemens. Who knows.

Tip for those installing - Be sure to keep the rubber seal/gasket off your original fan. I got to experience taking mine off, as it fit's a "tad" loose without it.

Other than that, pretty straight forward. You don't have to remove anything to get to it. The back bolt is a bit of a bear, with minimal room to ratchet.

In other news, I think my fan was still okay, but one of the 2 wires that powers the motors from the plug was pulled off the motor. I wasn't patient enough to try and repair it. The way the motor failed, it seemed like the 22 yr old gal still had some life in her, but the connection just came loose.

thanks for the follow-up.

you now have a fan you can solder back together to use as a spare in about 15 years or so when this 'new' one goes out.

I'd gladly ship it to any of you on your dime if you want it. You are welxome to keep as a spare or sell it yourself. Probably isnt worth the cost of shipping, but maybe Matthew would take it off my hands...Otherwise, to the dump, sadly.

I experienced almost the exact same thing earlier this year. Resistor went out, and about 3 months later, the fan went out. Is this coincidence? Or is this a typical sequence for fan failure? just curious...

I replaced my resister about a month after I got my truck; it was shot when I got the truck. I have yet to have any issues with the motor, and it's almost been 2 years, so probably just coencedence (spelling)
