leak between trans and transfer case?
I asked this question in another post I started but wasn't sure if it should be a new post because it was a new question.
I am looking at an 86 Toyota pickup to buy. One of the issues is a leak where the transmission and transfer case come together. It is a 5 speed so I think the transmission oil should be clearer or brownish and the transfer case red. The fluid leaking is red.
I am searching for info on this and find allot about a leak at the trail of the tcase but nothing where the tcase and trans come together.

Generally the 5-speed transmission and the transfer case use the same type of lubricant, a GL-4 (preferred for the synchros) or GL-5 (acceptable according to Toyota.) While the PO may have put different oil in the xfer case vs. the tranny, I don't think you can say the leak is one or the other based on fluid color. Mine has the same stuff in both.

Thanks,
How difficult is it to replace the seals? I suppose the best thing would be to do both at the same time?

The generally accepted method of separating the transfer case from the tranny is to start by pulling the transmission. I'm not sure if it's possible to separate the xfer case with the transmission still in the vehicle. As you can imagine, pulling the tranny is a fairly major project. Figure $600-800 for a shop to do it, plus the cost of separating the transfer case from the transmission and replacing the seals. If you're into it that far you'll probably want to replace the clutch at the same time.

Local shop only wants 125-150 depending on the seals.
It looks allot easier to separate the Tcase from the trans than the trans from the motor.

If it were me i would drain the transfer case oil, loosen all the bolts that hold it to the trans, put a jack under it, take out the cross member bolts from the frame and slide the transfer case back 1/2 inch. Clean the surfaces, apply some gasket maker and bolt back together.
If your trans oil level is not dropping then the seal on the back of the trans is fine. If that seal is leaking all your trans oil will go to the transfer case after a while, filling the transfer case with oil.
