Installing New Water Pump

Replacing my water pump on the 86 Truck 2WD. Notice a few drops a few weeks back and yesterday saw a small puddle under the truck, Leaking at the shaft. Glad today and all next week will be low 60s. The cold freeze has past. It's an easy job that didn't require the radiator to be removed, just the fan shroud.

Unfortunately, the shop who installed the old one partially stripped the threads out of one top located bolt hole. It hold but not real tight. Have some thread sealant ordered and hope that will seal the hole. It didn't look like it was leaking from that bolt. I hate hack shops.

It's all out and waiting on the Aisin new pump to come in. Was only $15 more than no names and this one is new not rebuilt.

Pipe thread should help tighten it up, and help seal it too.

I changed my water pump with an Aisin 5.5 years ago. The pump bolts were in pretty bad shape. Bought a new set of pump bolts from 22RE Performance.

Thanks for the information. That never crossed my mind as never change one before. I just ordered the kit. Didn't know some were studs. Takes the worry out of the install. I like easy truck therapy.

Did you replace the studs as well? Did they come out easily?

Yes the studs came out pretty easy with a good set of vice grips. They might come out when you take the nuts off. I sprayed it all down with Liquid Wrench the day before I did the work. Spray those fan nuts too. Mine were a pain in the butt because of all the rust.

Use some thread locker when you install the new studs. Also, if I remember right, the big long pump bolt needs thread sealant...not locker.

Thanks again. The fan nuts weren't too bad to get off. Two came off with the studs. More of an access issue. Just have the pump left to remove, but waiting for the new one to be delivered. Plan on using thread sealant on all bolts and locker on all the studs. BP Blaster on the nuts and studs is a good idea.

As long as next week is as warm and sunny as predicted, it will be a fun time.

I recently did mine and it wasn't bad at all. I used Permatex 80062 High Tack Gasket Sealant on both sides of the gasket. I've had great luck with this stuff of the years. It not only helps with a great seal but make removal, if you ever have to go there. a lot easier.

I'm also in SE VA and hoping this warmer weather holds out. I've got to tear into the top end of my motor as I'm pretty certain I have a head gasket failure. Fun times..

Thanks. I've heard of that Permatex. Wasn't sure if some was needed. Denso site says this model pump should not have sealant, so I am going to see if they are right. I will use thread sealant on all fasteners.

The weather has been nice since after the previous frigid temps. Good luck.

Be sure to change hoses if you have the pump out -- especially the one on the left side above the alternator.

Thanks. Always smart to have good coolant hoses. I change all the coolant hoses with Toyota ones about 5 years ago. Surprisingly, the original 30 plus year hoses showed no internal deterioration. Have them as emergency spares.

Just got the pump bolt set from 22RE Performance. It's a very nice stainless steel set. Thanks for the advice. The new pump goes in tomorrow if it will stop raining.

Installed new pump and no more leak. Seems not only did the hack shop semi-strip the bolt hole that's behind the fan pulley, but they used three smaller head bolts in place of the studs. Glad I got the bolt/stud/nut kit from 22RE Performance. It's a high quality kit. I installed the three studs as in OEM configuration. I had to wrap a lot of Teflon tape around that stripped bolt to get any tightening, Then RTV the hell out of the bolt hole in the pump housing. Glad it's a bolt that secures the inside water passage.

SE VA weather was great at partly sunny and low 60s. Perfect day for truck therapy.

They say things come in threes. 1) Replaced the water pump yesterday. 2) That night I went to get something out the truck and 'open door' courtesy light was out. Tap on the housing and it flickered. Easy fix. 3). Today on my way to get my meds, the truck steering felt heavy as if the power steering pump wasn't fully working. Thought maybe the belt was not tightened enough when reinstalled from the pump work. Drove about a 2 miles and got just got onto the interstate and heard a loud "train" noise. Had to be a flat tire and then I realize it was going flat from the start. The side wall has a vertical split.
