so to set the timing chain back to where it was before can i just take the cam sprocket loose and move it back a tooth then reinstall or do i have to take the whole front of the engine apart to get access to reset the timing chain?

It's going to be a pain but I think you can jump a tooth just by removing the valve cover. You will have to removed the sprocket but I think they'll be room to move it.

Can't help but to think about...

Spacely Sprockets

and the local rival Cogswell Cogs

just got off the phone with engnbldr and he said basically the same, to put it back the way it was and to check the distributer. if that still doesnt get it right, to then look at the adjustable sprocket from L.C. or to take a dremel to the distributer slot and extend it a little more to get the timing where it needs to be. that dude knows way too much about these engines off the top of his head. i will have pics of how the chain was to how it is now once im done with changing.

Is the little "shim" or "washer" there between the cam sprocket and the distributor drive gear?
I don't have a pic of it but you'd know what I mean if you looked. There should be an approximate 1/10" shim between the cam sprocket and distributor drive gear.
If you don't have it, you'll never get the distributor in the right 'tooth' to have sufficient range to adjust the timing and may hurt the distributor itself.

ok, so i took it back apart and maybe i do have that shim in there but, i have a new problem that i just found. look at the relation to the dot on the cam sprocket to the line on the crank pulley. there supposed to be lined up light?

so im beginning to think the guy who set this engine up did it wrong. isnt the crank pulley timing mark supposed to line up with the dot on the timing chain sprocket?

yeah, the dot on the crank sprocket should line up with a dot on the chain, just like the dot on the cam sprocket should like up with a dot on the chain as well, at the same time.

ok so in theory the dot on the cam sprocket should be inline with the notch on the crank pulley correct? which means if i rotate the engine by hand and set the crank pully notch to the 0 on the timing cover and then set the cam sprocket dot to the 12 o'clock position everything should be lined up correctly? is there anyway to see if the guy who did the install did not align the crank sprocket dot with the shiny link on the chain without tearing the front of the engine apart? i think thats is the whole problem.

nope.

You will have to remove the timing chain cover, verify the bright link on the chain is in line with the dot on the crank sprocket then put the dot on the cam sprocket in line with the bright link on the chain....

and hope that when i cranked it over and it clunked, that wasnt the valves hitting the pistons, even though i think it was.

ITS ALIVE!!!!!

after taking an 8 hour break from trying to put this thing back together yesterday, i started fresh this morning and i finally got it to fire and run. i was really afraid that i had bent a valve but i took a gamble and the advice bleeder gave me and got it running. it purrs pretty good but i need to adjust a valve or two. a big thank you to Bleeder and Abe for help whether it was in PMs, this thread, or a different one. if i ever meet you guys the first round is on me.

moral of the story, if it aint broke, dont fix it.

forgot to add, the timing chain sprocket is now set to how it was originally. with it being a complete tooth off.
