gearing question for the gurus
I have a guestion about the gearing in my project. I have a 1990 Xtra cab and I am putting a 5.0(302) and a T-5 tranny in it. I will be running 36" Iroks. I am in the process of building this motor and look to get a little over 300 ponies out of it, maybe more. Should I run 5.29's or 4.88's. It will see its share of the dirt so no road queen. However, I will be driving it alot so I want it to be able to go down the road good. What do you guys think?

4.88 if that's the only 2 choices. Your gonna have plenty of torque/hp to turn 'em. I would go with 4.10 or 4.30 that way you'd be able to get to a higher top speed. If you go too low(higher numerically) you'll be pretty much wasting all that extra low end umph from that motor. Sure you'll get up to speed faster, but that speed isn't gonna be as high when you have higher(lower numerically) gears.
It's not a popular concept in our community, but the way to solve the regearing issue is not just to regear. You can add HP to the same effect without having to mess with your gearing. Just MAKE SURE you have a clutch in mind that can handle it. Your gonna want the 1600 lb. HD pressure plate ceramic disk yada yada yada.
God, I hope your doing a SAS. Or just ignore everything I just said and do whatever. Because your 7.5" axle won't handle that kind of motor or that size tire, NO WAY NO HOW.

With that much horse power, I would go with 4.10's. 4.10's are the strongest gear set because the pinion has more teeth engaging the ring gear. Also people go with lower gears because Toyota motors don't have as high of an output as a small block V8.

thanks guys. I had thought about leaving the stock gears in it and trying them before I change the gears. I am doing a solid axle swap. I have everything except tires. I originally planned to put it in my 4runner but I sold it 2 weeks ago. I already have one set of 5.29's.
Here's another question for you guys, what type of locker should I run in the rear. It is a V6 rear end but Im not sure I want to run a full locker but I don't want it open all the time. Not really looking to put in an ARB or electric locker.
