I witnessed an idiot (at a stereo store) install a set into an 84 door (1 yr old truck at that time)and he used screws that were too long and no spacers. They put nipples on the outside of the door, lol. I believe he was history after that. The inside was actually pretty clean. Spacers are needed if using a speaker of quality due to the larger magnet. I have a 2 sets (8speakers) of seperates installed. I went with a Sony head unit not to pricey from Wally Mart that has a set of input for either an ipod and 1 for usb. I use a non powered 250 gig external harddrive that is loaded with 1000s of songs in mp3 format and can listen to it 24/7 for several days and never play the same song twice. I used a small piece of 2" velcro to stick it to the dash, so I can remove it when needed. I also have a set of seperates in the rear/side doors and run the 4 doors off of the head unit which is high powered 54watts/4channels and a USA amp Merlin 1500watt mono/internally bridged amp that pushes 2 12" cerwin Vega dual voice coil woofer in a Pro Bass super bass inclosure. I also installed the biggest amp battery and a 4 farad power capacitor so it will have the available power for long or repeated bass. I have around 1,500 invested and did all the work myself. The space in the back is pretty much useless now, but I like to jam when I am rollin. If I do need the space all I have to do is remove the 100 amp fuse at the battery, disconnect the positive and negative from the capacitor and remove the woofer enclosure because I mounted the amp and cap to the box behind the rear seat. if your factory 4" speakers are blown, anything you put in there will sound better but don't expect a huge jump in sound quality. 4" speakers can't handle any low end frequencies, they're basically overgrown tweeters that sound terrible in our 4runners because they are aimed your feet.

I got a pair of free OEM 6x9's out of my friend's Xterra that he claimed had decent low end response, so I will mount those in the back of my Xtracab.
How difficult is it to pull wires through the door jams in these trucks? I know that my truck has no wiring harness through the door so I'd have to design my own if I decided wanted to. I have pulled one set before and I don't think I'd go through the hassle again (going through an OEM loom at least).
