Hi guys im Chris. My cousin and I buy and sell trucks alot and found this board to be very useful for toyota info. We are actually becoming 4x4 enthusiasts just from being around so many great trucks and meeting alot of cool people who are into these types of vehichles and off raod type driving.

Now for the dilemma. Right now I am in possession of a 1991 Toyota 2wd pickup with a 22re 4 cylinder engine. I had picked up this truck over the weekend and noticed it ran smooth when cruising but sputtered a bit at idle but nothing serious. I figured maybe a fuel delivery prob so for starters I tried a bottle of Gumout injector cleaner and filled up the tank with chevron 87 octane. Not much difference afterwards so continued my usual routine to have it cleaned up and clean the engine bay with degreaser and a water hose. No problems after cleaning the engine but later that night I started up the truck and it died after about 30 seconds after starting. Had it towed to my mechanic hes saying a new fuel pump seems to be in order. Already checked all electrical components and seems to be ok in that category so Im thinking this really is a fuel issue.


Thoughts, comments, concerns, any input appreciated and I do look forward to learning and sharing some of my own knowledge to the boards in the future.

Fuel pump sounds reasonable but hard to tell without driving it.

I'd do the usual tune-up items - plugs, filters, etc...
See if any of that makes a difference and go from there.

I had a sputtering on both my 1st and 2nd gen and plugs fixed them both - be sure to only go with OEM plugs.

Thanks for the reply Fink. What brand and plug type would be oem for a 91 22re, I've searched google and gotten alot of different answers from differents threads on different boards. Im also a little confused on the gap im geting answers from .31 up to .37 gap. Just to mention I usually use denso coppers on my buy/sell vehichles.

NGK plugs, i made the mistake of getting O'riellys "universal" plugs and they barely fit tight. My mechanic said NGK is the way to go...

Thanks for the reply NW dude, O'reily seems to have there own branded part or fluid for everything even O'reily brand synthetic oil! lol kinda scary?

Just an update, its been verified that the fuel pump did in fact FAIL and a new one was needed and has been installed. I thought for sure washing down the engine bay had caused an electrical issue but I was wrong.

OEM for Toyotas is anything NipponDenso with regards to electronic componetry. Denso products are used from the factory, but NGK/NTK is an alternative as stated in the FSM's. Both are high quality and I've never noticed any performance differemce between the two except on early 22re O2 sensors. I do believe Denso is better from what I've seen.

Factory recommendation on spark gap is .31. I don't know where anyone got .37 for a 22re.

Yes the new fuel pump got the truck fixed and up for sale!

Thanks for the info bro, I'll remeber that tip about the sensor as well. That will come in handy for sure.

First we checked all the electrical components but everything was making spark so no problem there, then we realized there was no fuel being delivered after tring to start and checking for fuel delivery near the intake manifold. We then removed and tested the fuel pump to find out it was not operating at all.
