Dancing Speedometer

I think I need a new speedometer cable. When it gets cold, my speedometer will start jumping around and makes a horrible grinding noise behind the dash. How much of a pain-in-the-ass is it to replace ('87 pickup 4spd)?

Sounds like a speedo cable to me. How much of a pain depends on how mechanically incllined you are. A big pain will be unplugging/replugging it from the speedo. Other than that, its just snaking it out, and getting it out of the brackets holding it down.

might be the speedo too, my 90 had that same problem . it whats one of the bushings in the speedo was going out and causing it to jump all over and howl untill it warmed up. fixed it with some lube for awhile then it came back.. got another off ebay...

talk to Strap22 He can get you a good deal on factory parts. Trust me, just get a brand new cable. Its not really fun to pull them out over and over, so better to just do it once and be done with it.

You dont have to pull the dash, just the speedo surround and the speedo itself.
