I bought the 4runner here in Maryland, and now I found out it is originally a CA vehicle, and I need a muffler. Can I make it 48 state by changing o2 sensors? Does the computer have to be changed, or flashed? Am I stuck buying ca emmissions crap forever? TIA.

I have a CA truck. I think you are stuck buying CA crap forever. It sucks having 2 O2 sensors and extra EGR crap. RIght now I'm having an EGR temperature sensor issue, which the temp sensor for the EGR is only on CA trucks.

It's not all bad, though, as most people here have ways to bypass check engine lights causes by an extra california required sensor. For example, the EGR temperature sensor can be bypassed with a 1k resistor. I'm sure there's something for the extra O2 sensor.

To do this correct and by federal guidelines I have been told you would have to swap to a non California engine.

As stated there are ways around these things just don`t get caught!!

Thanks guys. I'm hoping that dimensionally, the muffler and pipe I ordered will be the same, just no bung for the o2 sensor. I can handle putting a bung on the pipe. I guess I'm going to be doing searches for getting around the ca emmissions.

no experience with CA yotas but my buddies crotchrocket is a CA bike and apparently theres a flap in the exhaust to help low end power because they put smaller cams in the CA bikes, his bike was a Yamaha FZR600 btw

get what you want, it does not need to be CA. just make sure to meet your local regs.

I got the muffler, welded assembly. Initially it looks like it has a too short intermediate pipe, but nothing that can't be adjusted/hacked. I'll post up a thread with pics on how I do.

I have a CA Emissions 92 4runner. it only has 1 cat, and 1 O2 sensor. I pulled the catalytic converter off and threw a test pipe in its place... still runs great, no check engine light.

That's great news. This one has 2 unfortunately. Apparently the PO unbolted the one after the cat, and it is just sitting there on the studs. I can take it out by hand, and then it just rattles around. But I've got no codes!

just a hunch, but i think you can get around the 2nd o2 sensor by just mounting it out of the way, like in the frame somewhere. my guess is that it would read a near perfect o2 level all the time. i'm in the exact same situation you're in, and don't plan on keeping my 93 up to cali standards

edit: also, has anyone found a way around the plate on top of the valve cover? (the one that holds all the emission check valves) i would really like to be able to read the entire "toyota" on it

i think one of the main issues is that 90% of exhaust systems out there are non-cali, meaning that they don't have the second o2 port after the cat converter. that's the boat i'm in. i don't have the time or resources to make another port, so no performance exhaust for me. i will buy a high-flow cat, though

I have a several page thread on the issues I had with my '99 4Runner which was a Cali-spec rig.

You can change the muffler with no problems at all - as stated above, if you're existing Cali-spec setup is working there is no need to change it as you will pass your local inspection with flying colors since Cali is way strict.

If for some reason you do ever need to change it you will just need to get a rear O2 simulator from Underdog Racing Development, install that in-line with your ECU and then do whatever you want.

Just be sure this won't affect your local regulations.
The past two states I've lived in have not had vehicle inspections, thank God.

too bad urd doesn't make squat for the 22re. you might be able to fake an o2 sensor with a voltage divider. just a hunch

Here is what happened. I got the muffler off of ebay, $92 shipped. The part of the pipe from the cat to the muffler was different. The one off ebay was shorter and straight, the one on the truck had a bung for the O2 sensor, and a slight offset vertically. But, the original pipe was is good shape. So I cut off the bolts from the flange, and removed the old muffler/tailpipe assembly. Cut off the front pipe from the old muffler, which had the O2 sensor in it. Cut off the front pipe from the new muffler, and used a coupling from advance autoparts, and 2 clamps, to put the thing together. It worked great! No check engine, and it passed inspection! I will post a picture later.

i called my local toy dealer (the one that has good service) and asked how much a new muffler/pipe would cost. the cali version was about $200. what got me was the non-cali version was about $50 more. the guy on the other end of the phone was just as puzzled
i might go the stock route, just so i don't have to deal with all ^that^. not that i don't like what you did, but pitiful me has no welder... (hmm... x-mas is coming up...)
