make sure the detent (downshift) cable is adjusted properly and the trans has good, clean fluid and filter and is filled properly.

What size tires are you using? I keep mine in the power mode since I have 31" tires, in the normal mode and slow acceleration and sometimes will shift up and down (2-3), like it doesn't know which gear to stay in. But it doesn't skip 2, it shifts fine in power mode. There are two shift solenoids in the tranny. They work in combinations of off and on for the gears. 1st gear, no. 1 is on and 2 is off. 2nd gear, no. 1 is on and 2 is on. For 3rd gear no. 1 off, no. 2 on, for OD, both 1 and 2 are off.

one can buy a solenoid kit for just over a hundred bucks and in it is all the solenoids that one could replace..
i happen to think it is the solenoid[pretty easy job to change, and fun too]but you may wanna check all the simplest things first.
however if you then are leaning towards the solenoids the best thing to do is to rule out the possibility of a wiring short from the ecm to the tranny first and then just go ahead and dig in there and pop em out..you can test each one for resistance and/or use your battery to actuate them/or in the case of failure ,not-actuate!
i have found that false readings can happenn fairly regular and the best way is simply to pop all of em out and test em from there....
some people say "oh dont change all of em cuz they are pricy" but i say change all of em and then seal up yer pan and be done with it..its only just over a hundred bucks and a few hours or less labor with a helper...i think toyota and other places charge over a hundred bucks per solenoid but like i said there is an engineering shop or sumthin in the old posts that sells them in a kit with all of em fer cheap...i have ordered from them but forget who it is..maybe someone else remembers..hope this helps ..gl

I just replaced my #1 and #2 shift solenoids and it was pretty easy. Just do a diagnostic and read your transmission codes. I am sure someone can help with the diagnostic procedure. This is where I ordered my solenoids, this is a kit for the #1 and #2 shift solenoids. they do not sell them individually, so...you gotta buy both.
