89 4runner idle surging
first of all can anyone tell me where the broken off vacuum hose runs to thats got a plastic plug stuck in it? you can see it between the black hose and the blue hoses.
also im having a problem with the idle surging when at a red light with the brake pedal depressed. let off brake and it stops. doesnt do it all the time, but most the time. booster maybe?
and the only other thing is a clicking noise when driving up a hill or something at higher rpms. when it does it you can let off the gas a little and it will go away. i know its not in the trans because i just replaced it.
any help would be appriciated, thanks

I think you may have a mod done on your truck where you remove the air intake silencer box. 1st vent the crank case into a breather bottle so you don't get blow by and clog up your air intake and throttle body. 2nd connect the plugged off part after the air filter. you will probably need drill a hole somewhere. it could be causing your problems but check the vacuum lines that go into the intake manifold on the passengers side. make sure they are all in the correct order. and make sure they go into the throttle body in the correct order.. could you post another picture of the air intake. is it all stock? I could be wrong. the crank case just looks like it is vented weird. that is why I think you have a mod. if you don't have the mod it just gets connected directly to the silencer box. that is connected to the air intake. just look around on the air intake to see where you can connected. I have no idea what the clicking is. It could just be a natural engine noise. good luck.

If you still have the emissions sticker on the underside of the hood, it will tell you by tracing the pipe.
It looks to me like the AS hose has been removed from the pipe that leds to the AS reed valve & someone stuck a plastic clip in the hole that won't seal it. AS=Air Suction. You are likely hearing the pulsing exhaust as the reed valve opens/closes normally. "AS" is an emissions feature designed to bring oxygen into the exhaust stream to ensure oxygen is available as the exhaust gas enters the catalyst.
Edit: cancel the clicking noise suggestion. You would hear the AS reed valve pulsing at idle.

The idle surge problem you described is very similiar to mine 1990 4run 4x4 3vze, it comes up randomly at idle in park or nuetral, and while driving as you mentioned when the brakes are applied, but also at cruising speeds while decelerating a slight bucking motion ((both symptoms draw my attention to the tachometer bouncing twice per sec between 0-2300rpm.))
I had ripped that hose which is missing in your pic, i repaired with SuperBlack RTV and put a better clamp on, but no change in performance. I also found the vac line from the brake booster was loose and sloppy put a decent clamp on that and it seemed to work,.....for about ten minutes or so. still runs great but sounds like shtt when it comes up to a parking spot. all fingers point to the throttle body sensors or vacuum leaks, but from what i been able to find here in yotatech my bet is on TPS throttle position sensor just cause the gas pedal is not performing as it has in the past. Its too cold outside to mess with but if it works ill holler. any suggestions welcome.

Idle surge is combination of several things: vacuum leak; coolant temp sensor not sender not working; clogged idle control under throttle body and tps. I had the same problem last month and now my 3.0 is running great.also burp coolant really good with heater running and parked at incline upward.
