4:88 gears and 31" Tires?
#21
Just wondering if anyone is running 31" tires and 4:88's? I am running 30" tires right now and 4:88's and it is screaming down the freeway at 55mph (Around 3K RPM). If I were to go with 31" tires would it make that big of a difference and correct the speedometer? right now the Speedometer is about 5-7 mph off. Thanks in advance.
I really don't know much about gearing but I have been told that 4.88s are a nice set up? what do you floks think?

To resurrect this thread, I want to pose a question:
I have a 22RE with an automatic (shoot me, I know). It came with 255's and 4.56 gearing. I went up to 31's for style on fire roads. Typical Toyota gear charts tell you that 31's go great with 4.56's, but that's with a manual trans with an OD ratio of .85. My auto has an OD ratio of .69 (A44D). When I use the 4lo.com gear calc, it seems like I should be WAY above 4.88's to get back to a "usable/economical Toyota" rpm band on the freeway. Will someone please check my math???
PS- Runnin' about 3k rpms at 75 on the freeway now, with the 31/4.56 combo. Lucky to get near 18mpgs.
TIA

Voodoo- Thanks for the 4wheelonline link. Makes sense (the math part) but I notice it lends itself to the V8 rig, operating at low 2k's at 65 mph. My little 4 banger, of course, needs to run more rpm's, but I'm not sure how much... especially given the mods. Would 3000 at 65 be a good guess?
Once I get some opinions for the 22RE's "sweet spot range" for highway rpms, I'll be able to get some idea of gearing.

Just forget about the "economy" band on the chart... maybe with the V6 engines, but with the 4cyl, you need all the gearing you can get, otherwise, you will be driving full throttle to keep it moving, and that burns a lot of gas.

Drop a manual trans in there and you'd love your truck EVEN MORE!!!
I'm running 22re, 5 speed, 4.56 diffs and 31's on heavy steel rims. It's GREAT!!! My truck is my DD, so every commute gas mileage is key for me. I get 20-22 mpg with this setup. That's hammering on it at every chance I get. It's an awesome combo. Highway driving isn't the best, it drops me down to about 18-20 mpg (could've been all the gear I had in the back and all the big hills...). It will hold it's own on the highway, it holds on the hills better but still some down shifting on the big ones.
The only problem is the noise. Higher RPMs, 3" body lift and no carpet makes for a loud ride. I wear earplugs for my long highway drives.
