3vze 95 4runner labor hours
Hi everybody, I just bought a 1995 4Runner with a knock. I took it to my mechanic hoping for an easy fix. He is telling me it is going to cost 3000 dollars to pull the engine and fix the problem. Does this sound extremly high or about right???

If I were not a mechanic, I would not have bought a vehicle that the motor had a knock in.
Now that that is out of the way, if that $3000 includes a full rebuild on the motor including tearing apart the heads to recondition them as well, then it sounds somewhat reasonable depending on your area.
A re-manufactured 3vze (3.0L) long block typical price is roughly $1500. The additional $1500 to pull/replace the old motor is what sounds a little high.
I know in my area for a re-manufactured 22r Jasper motor it costs around $1800-2000 for the entire job. An additional $1000 for a 3.0 sounds un reasonable.
Find out if any of the shops in your area are a Jasper Motor dealer/installer. You might be able to find a better rate. Also those motors have a 36 month/75,000 mile parts and labor warranty.
wabbit, I doubt that this guy will find a shop that will be willing to do a 3.4 swap.
