And for those of you that keep running the tank low on gas, the next answer is, "Yes. You have to drop the gas tank to remove/replace the fuel pump on 2nd gen 4Runners." The gas helps to keep the pump cool and running the tank low causes increased wear on it.
You might want to price out one of those pumps too to get an idea of what it can wind up costing you OUCH!

mines was going strong for 12 years before I changed it cause a mechanic told me it was the reason my engine was cutting out and it wasnt even that. So i bought a new one for nothing, but I dont remember it being that expensive

I guess it is a matter of perspective. To me $120-200 plus labor ain't cheap. Then again, I'm a cheap SOB

When I go about 170 miles, mines pretty muc on the E... I hardly ever let it get below a quarter tank though. My fuel light has only been on once, that was when i was stopped on a steeeep hill and I geuss the gas was pushed to one side of the tsank. But when i did fill it up after being on E, I put in about 14 gallons at most. I hate the fuel light to be on in any vehicle im driving, so i dont like testing to see just how far i can go.

Talk about inaccurate gas guage.

I managed to put in, without much effort, 15.5008 gallons and the needle still had about 1/16" to hit the Empty mark.

Last time I got it even lower, and was only able to do 15.4 gallons with major stuffing and rocking.

That little idiot light that comes on when you are running low on gas is just that A warning to the idiot behind the wheel that if you do not do something soon the truck is going to do something that will probally make you very upset.....It is not intended to be a YOU ARE RUNNING ON YOUR RESERVER FUEL TANK NOW light.... even if the light comes on at 4 gals remaining....you are not going to make a 100 miles...some of us with lift kits big tires and low gears might change religions if we made 50 miles with the light on....also that is the bottom of the tank no telling what yummie scum you are trying to run through the injectors....IMHO....think the light should be joined by a voice that repeats every minute.....GET GAS NOW...GETGAS NOW...

Hmm...I have never gotten more than 15.4 in a tank ever... then again I haven't ever run it dry either....I guess there coulda been two more gallons left but I wasnt willing to risk it. Even if there was 2 gallons left - thats about 36 miles at best. That not even enough for a round trip from home to work

I usually go about 250 miles on a tank in my 1995 v6 5 speed. Fill up is around 17 gallons. I ran out of gas once in the middle of the night on the Bluegrass Parkway or Bluegrass Freeway in Kentucky. That was a long night! Fill up was right at 18 gallons.

Romad - I buy all my parts at Toyota of Grapevine. They're great guys there!

I have a '90 4runner and the owners manual stated 17.4. The most I've ever put into it after running LOW LOW was 16.5 gallons. I was sweating bullets driving that last 15 miles at 65mph....lol

I'm going to resurrect this old thread by stating I have actually put 20.2 gallons in my '94 4x4 xtracab! Where the heck does it GO?!?

That was from dead empty and rocking it, filling up to the neck and burping it. R U sure these things don't have a 19.8 gallon tank plus fuel neck?? Like all, I too have no factory manual....:pat:

BTW, I've run out of gas THREE TIMES on the interstate due to a non-functioning low fuel light. It has NEVER worked.

I got my 94 4runner from a friend that died of cancer at 34 years old. He bought it about year before he died. I helped him negotiate the price and the deal when he bought it new. The SR5 - V6 package and the towing package came with an 18 gallon tank, IIRC. I'll have to take a look at the window sticker that came with it. I have all of the paperwork and receipts since new. I'll make a copy of the pages of the owners manual that apply and mail them to you, if you want. PM me your address.

I can run it down to a solid "low fuel" light and keep going for another 40 miles or so before I get too nervous about running out of gas. The max I have ever pumped into her is 17.1 gallons. IIRC, I went about 60 miles after the low fuel light came on.
